Dynaudio bass rattle
« on: 18 September 2016, 21:48 »
Just came back from a drive during which I noticed that on songs with heavy bass-kick I get a slight but noticeable rattle at the driver's door. I say strange because as soon as the window goes 1 mm down (like in any position other than fully shut) the rattle disappears. I also didn't have time to check the other doors but from the driver's seat I didn't hear any other rattles anywhere else. Just on driver's door, when window is fully closed and song has a distinct bass kick (most electronic dance stuff).

I am not sure it was there from the beginning or it's the point where the initial excitement about a new car wears out (shouldn't be so soon!) and you start noticing annoying stuff. It's also one the least probable things a dealer will confirm or be able to do anything about it so I'd like to see whether other people are getting it also on their Golfs.

And another note: No matter if I turn the sub-woofer volume all the way down to -9, or the mids, or the trebles, the rattle seems to be ever-present if the song is one of the bass-heavy ones...

The thing with the dynaudio is that I don't think they filter out any LF from the door speakers.

In all the aftermarket car audio I've ever installed I've always removed the sub-bass (x-over of around 100-120Hz) from the mids and used the sub for these frequencies to give them an easier time.

And my drivers door rattles too!

Wow, great news... Problem is once I notice such a thing I can't help but trying to hear it again every time I'm in the car  :undecided:

It's so annoying not being able to tone it down with the EQ. Maybe time to look into the Dynaudio/Discover Pro hacking scene? I remember people saying they had managed to unlock 40 EQ presets some time, some place (can't find any links now)

Today I did a bit of experimenting with the window:

When it's fully closed (last clicking part) the rattle comes on. Now if you lower it just a tiny tiny bit, the lowering can be so little that the window looks fully closed from the outside and no audible extra noise (although did not test at high speeds) then the damn rattle disappears!! So the quickest you can depress the button with your finger, and lift, the better.

Now obviously this should not be acceptable on a 30K car so I will be visiting the dealers tomorrow and see what they say. I've had bass rattles before but they were clearly down to hard door trims and they rattled all the time regardless of where the window was. Now this is a bit different. The entire door seems rattle-free, the bass can be punching really high without any vibrations but on the last 1mm that the window locks in closed position, it's as if some tuning occurs that creates the rattle.

Wondering what could be done and whether any part could be replaced to deal with this...

I found with mine, turning the bass down on the head many equalizer but compensating with a louder sub woofer volume is the best mix for vibration free music!

Tried that but if it's a bass-heavy song only the "window 1mm down" method cures it. Might eventually drop the dealer a visit. It's not an ownership spoiling thing, rather a minor niggle.

I had a rattly door which was down to not enough anti-rattle tape fitted at the factory. Sounds possible it's something similar.

MY GTI PP when I first picked it up from the dealer 3 years ago did not cause vibrations in the doors with bass heavy music.  I can remember thinking how good the sound was and how it was vibration free.  But more recently the door speakers are vibrating on bass heavy music That was until I picked up my Golf R yesterday and when i played the same music tracks on my new Nav Pro and Dynaudio setup the door speakers in the Golf R are vibration free.  My point is I know for a fact fastenings and fixtures in a car can rattle loose after extensive time of playing bass heavy music.  An extreme example would be my mate many years ago got 1200 watt subs in the boot of his Ford Escort and manage to rattle the rear windscreen out of its frame and the boot lock ceased to work any more.

However your car is new, so I am wondering if you have a loose fitting or fixture in your door which is causing the vibration.  By opening the window a touch you may be right about the location of the vibration int he door and I would say it does need closer investigation. However whether you hear the vibrations in the doors with bass will depend on the overall volume and frequency of bass being played as well.  My Golf R door speakers are much better than my GTI door speakers.  But if I played my heavy bass music over a certain volume (almost too loud to comfortably listen to), I did hear the door speakers start to slightly vibrate, just nowhere near as much as my GTI's door speakers did.

Seeing as you have a new car I would get the vibration checked out?

Yes I'll probably have to drop the dealer a visit it seems. It's not too much, and it's certainly not at uber-high levels so just that tiny bit annoying.
