Going back to GAP insurance, can you get it at any time?

I meant to get it for my wifes car but when I had a look at some of the GAP sites the first question they ask is, did I get my car less than 6 months ago (roughly)?

Does it just make it dearer if your car is over 6 months old? I can't get my head round it.

[quote author=Booth11 I'm having front and rear dashcams installed this coming Friday.

Wow thanks for all the info about GAP, never heard of it before!!

Booth11 re your cams.
Are you having them installed by the dealer or a private firm?
Reason for asking;
I asked my VW dealer to wire in my dash cam and they refused point blank.
Did it myself using the dash plug-in power point......BUT....
With my new Golf coming in a month or so time I will want my present dash cam wired/fitted permanently.
So any advice you could provide would be most helpful, esp. the specs of your new cams.

Thanks.

The are being installed by the dashcam company - Blackvue, or rather one of their installers.  They do offer an installation service independent of buying the cams.

ALA get a which magazine thumbs up. Why not chat to them direct. I do not think they charge any more after 6 months than from new.

Been seeking guotes for insuring my new 150ps GT Golf.

SAGA quoted under £200 for a fully comp. policy* which includes;
A new replacement car in the first year if mine is written off   :smiley:
A new replacement car in the second year providing I do not exceed 12,000 miles from new  :smiley: (I do around 4k/yr.)

So I can forget GAP until I come to insure for the third year, brilliant!!!!

what do they mean by 'replacement car' Mike? Are they going to order you an exact replacement from the factory and provide a courtesy car for three/four months in the meantime? It may well say in small print 'provided one is readily available' and with these cars they rarely are. If thats the case they will revert to 'market value' payout so its worth checking this very carefully with the insurer before you decline GAP.

Mike,

You've said that you'll get a replacement car under the Saga motor policy in year 1 if yours is written off. What about if your car is stolen and not recovered? In these circumstances, do Saga consider a car to be written off?

It might be worth checking with Saga their stance on claims settlement if your car is stolen in year 1, (and in year 2), and whether their definition of 'write off' / 'written off' applies to stolen, unrecovered vehicles, as well as vehicles that are uneconomic to repair.

If they don't pay for a new replacement vehicle in the event of unrecovered theft, it would be worth reconsidering delaying purchase of GAP cover until year 3.

Thanks Both,

Before you both posted/replied I sniffed a rat so I emailed SAGA for a full and detailed explanation of their policy statement.
SAGA replied saying would be with me within 48hours.

The time is up and I still have not received an explanation.

My sniff is quickly turning to a strong stink.

Watch this space.

Get a quote from ALA and then get 1234 to beat it - You'll be at around £120 for same/better cover than the dealer provides.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
