Decision, GAP Insurance Or Not?

I've not taken it out just yet but I'm seriously thinking of doing it before my car is 12 months old.
I've been quoted £140ish this morning with ALA which I think is expensive.
Took it out with the dealer on my A3 and obviously never needed it

Worth noting that some insurance companies will pay out fully if a car is written off in the first 12 months on a normal policy.

I'm waiting until my first year is up before getting gap insurance as my current policy covers write offs for the time being. You get 365 days from delivery of a new car to take out gap insurance with most companies so you don't necessarily need to rush into it.

Might not be worth the paper it's written on...

Most of these policies are replacement within 12 months old (not a GAP type reimbursement of monetary difference), dependent upon the replacement car being obtainable within 3 months.

Considering my R took 8.5 months to get here, i'd have never gotten a replacement vehicle out of my insurance company. Maybe VW are getting them out a lot quicker, but 3 months for a replacement performance Golf ordered from scratch is really pushing it.

£140 will be a bargain when your insurance leaves you a few grand short of being able to buy a replacement car to the same standard as what you have just lost

I've had GAP insurance on every one of my GTI's and have it on the R.  Don't go for the dealer GAP which is massively overpriced.  Shop around.  I've got mine with ALA went for the Vehicle Replacement Policy which gets you up to what the actual list price of the vehicle is, as opposed to Return to Invoice which gets you just what you actually paid for it.  Could make a difference if you got a big broker/dealer discount off list price as the same might not be obtainable next time round.

Particularly worth doing on the R as it is a car sought after by thieves.

Lots of ALA discount codes knocking around but try PISTON12 which is the highest I've seen.

£140 is a good price for GAP, and peace of mind.

Be very careful placing reliance on that. Many companies will (if you actually read their small print in the policy) actually only replace a car with a new one in the first year 'if one is readily available'. With a car such as a performance Golf that has a long lead in time for a factory order its not very likely they will be able to replace it from stock, particularly if you have optional extras on it. At that point they will then default to market value payout - they will not pay out the original cost of the car.

^+1. In the overall scheme of things, a small price to pay. Kailmon, if you took out GAP cover with the Audi dealer on your previous car, with the high prices quoted by dealers under manufacturer-based insurance arrangements, I'd wager that you paid quite a bit more than £140 for GAP cover on your A3.

Many thanks for the heads up and info on GAP insurance.  I have just taken out a policy with ALA GAP Insurance.  I may have paid a bit more than most of you, but I felt the amount I paid was very little compared to the potential benefit of having the insurance.

I took out 4 years Vehicle Replacement Plus for £299 using the promotion code provided by "Booth11" on this thread.  The code worked a treat and made a saving of over £40+.  The policy is also superior to the dealer GAP Insurance as it was practically the same policy except for 4 years not 3 years as on the dealers GAP Insurance.  Also the cost of the Dealers GAP Insurance was £650 originally, but he offered to knock £100 off as a special offer.  So I have still made a saving of a couple hundred pounds.

So I now have 4 years of Vehicle Replacement Plus, GAP Insurance.  Yet again many thanks to all of you who have taken part on this thread, your advise has saved me hundreds of pounds.

Yeah about that...  My wife's a vegetarian and hates the smell of meat cooking on a barbeque.  So may have to pass on that idea!   

Plus may go surfing later today as weather and surf is looking OK.  So will get sand all in my current car before change over to new one.
