Inspection Service?
« on: 05 August 2016, 14:54 »
My GTD is on a long life service regime. It has done 29,000 miles and the computer says it needs just an inspection service now and an oil change in another 8000 miles/377 days.

Local VW service want £108 for the inspection service and after asking them what is involved they say it is just that an inspection of breaks, tyres, fluid levels etc.

Is that the norm? I don't think I have ever had a service before that doesn't involve an oil and filter change at the very least.

Think its only the rain sensor, so no need for calibration.

I'm assuming that was intended in response to my windscreen query in which case, thanks very much  Sorry op :embarrassed:

I check oil, fluid, water levels each week along with tyres and pressures etc. It only takes a few minutes. But people leave their cars to suffer until the garage tells them it is wrong, so there is an opportunity to make money = inspection service.

My cars get an oil change and service every year or when the recommended miles is reached, whichever comes first, if vw told me it wasn't nessasery, i would tell them its getting done anyway, i like to know that the car is getting all the maintenance it wants and a bit more to keep it happy.
377 days, i would be changing the oil and having it changed again before 377 days were up. Even if i didn't have to commute to work.
I don't trust them when the say they can go ages without a service, over several years that will damage the engine, though gullible (everybody) people will believe it (remember a person is smart but people are dumb, sense isn't common), my hobby also though.

Give it the maintenance it wants and needs not what they say it needs, they might lose money servicing cars less but then they can make more money selling you parts to fix them because stuff is worn out.

Old volvos were tough but didn't make much money because they never needed repairing. Brick $#!t houses, false economy.

That's the way VW seems to set the longlife regime: oil/filters change every 2 years and inspection every year. My car was set up the same from factory however after first year and first oil service they set it up for fixed service.
If you feel comfortable having a service each 2 years, I wouldn't worry about the inspection as long as you keep an eye on fluid levels, tyre tread, etc.

How old is the car? Has it been serviced before?

It's a few months over two years old.

Just went ahead with the inspection service and they changed the pollen filter while they were at it.

Doing less work miles these days so toying a change to a DSG DPBlack GTI after it turns 3 in May. Waiting to see if there is a face lift coming later in the year before looking into it seriously though. I think I need a couple of days in a DSG to work out if I will get on with it. A few years ago My old MK6 went into the garage for a couple of weeks and they gave me a DSG passat but I really didn't like it.

In that case there is something wrong as the maximum miles to an oil change service on the so called 'Longlife' regime is approx. 18k or 2 years - whichever comes first!

Are you certain the car is still running on its original oil?

It's fine as it had an oil change service about a year ago.
