Clutch Question
« on: 28 July 2016, 13:07 »
I have a 1991 Golf Driver with the 1.6 engine, but I'm planning on fitting a 1.8 GTI 8V bottom end to it. I also plan to change the clutch and cable at the same time as it makes sense (and the bite is at the top of the pedal anyway).

Can I use the clutch kit for the 1.6 or should I use a GTI 8V clutch kit instead?

Clutch ro flywheel. 1.6 id have thought.
I know when I did my clutch there were 3 different ones.
Apparently bolt holes differ but I dont know.

If your doing the clutch cable ide go manual adjusting but thats personal preference

the 1.6 has a 6 bolt flywheel and the gti has a 9 bolt flywheel. so if you were to fit the gti clutch you would need to source a 9 bolt f/w. the latter would be my choice as the gti clutch is a bit bigger

Ah, so source a GTI 8V flywheel (if my bottom end doesn't already have one) and use the GTI clutch. Might as well see if I can get a lighter flywheel, seeing as I'm going through all the trouble.

Although looking at it, does this kit contain everything I need?

25% off at Euro Car Parts at the moment, but I regularly get e-mails with 2 hour 30% codes so will wait and get it as cheap as possible. In the mean time, I intend to adjust the clutch cable to remedy the problem for now as a quick fix.

Everything but the flywheel. Also want to source the release arm stuff for the box. Cheap enough and easy to do

To be honest, I've messages a few gearbox places and getting quotes for reconditioning the box, starting to figure that while it's off the car if I can get everything done like differential bolts and release arm etc. then I can re-fit it worry free. The GTI bottom end is still too fresh to worry about (126,000 miles) and the cylinder head will need a light skim and a clean up of the ports and that'll be enough, although if I can find a place that'll port the head and manifolds for a good price I may as well, just for the hell of it... Old school tuning FTW!

That being said, I have toyed with the idea of fitting a hydraulic clutch and 02J gearbox to my (soon to be) 1.8 litre engine, is this physically possible? Would be nice to have the hydraulic clutch but old school carburettor engine. Plus means I have the foundations in place for a 1.8T, VR6 or other engine swap later in life.

Yeh swap flywheel and such. Bolt hearbox up. Use 100 driveshafts.
Fit pedal box and a new brake fluid reservoir and bleed up.
J even think the ratios might be fairly similar

Well, if I use that diesel box of yours, it'll suit the lower revving carburettor engine. Then with the hydraulic clutch and cable change it'll make for a nice cruiser. Not about quick 0-60 times.
