I'll be working a silly long night shift on Wednesday unfortunately Brendan, otherwise I'd have loved to have seen the car fresh from the dealership.

Well done for getting a bit of discount that late on in proceedings, how on earth did you manage that?!!

My father used to be a procurement manager, so his wheeler dealer tricks of the trade must have rubbed off on me.  Also I asked whether they would have the premium mats in stock should I want to get some on hand over day.  But they said they would throw them in for free.  However on day of order they would not.  I guess persistence is the key.  Maybe I should take up ordering other peoples cars on their behalf for a living

The car should be at the Dealership on Monday, should you want a crafty look before or after work Andy.  I will also try to post some pics when I get the car.

I now finally have my Golf R.  All I can say is WOW!  I will post a full comparison soon between my old GTI PP and new Golf R.  I will also post pics soon.  However, when I got in it and drove off the forecourt it felt like I had been driving it for years it was so refined and comfortable to drive it felt like there was no other car which I would feel more comfortable driving than a Golf R.  The gear changes were silky smooth, and the suspension on Comfort is so soft, without wallowing or affecting the overall ride on corners.  Race mode also has a great setup and feels much stiffer on the suspension while giving you a much more aggresive throttle response.  Yet I found it was also much more useable than the Sport mode on my GTI PP which felt almost like it was all or nothing in comparison.

I have also lucked in with the Tyres on my Golf R.  I discovered to my delight VW had kindly shod my wheels in Continental Sport Contact 5's not bridgestones.  I am unsure of how these tyres will fair compared to the Bridgestone Potenzas, as I have only ever had Potenzas.  But I am sure some of you will be able to fill me in with your own experiences of these tyres.

The drive home from the dealership was great.  This car is quick yet so refined it felt much more relaxed and effortless than the speed I was going.

As mentioned earlier I will give you a full run down on how I find the Golf R compared to my old GTI PP soon.

Good to hear the handover went well Brendan and a big congrats now you've finally got your mitts on the R.
I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the cars and how they compare.
A good few of us have gone from GTI to R and GTD to R and it's always good to hear what people think.

I'll pop down and have a nose at your GTI at the weekend if I get chance, assuming they're putting it on the forecourt.

Did they have their demo/Showroom ClubSport in yet? Be keen to see one of those in the flesh.

Thanks for the kind words.  I suspect if there was a Clubsport around at the dealership I would have noticed it with the extra body kit on it, even though I didn't get to walk around and have a good nose at cars yesterday.  I am aiming to sit down over the next day or two and write my thoughts on the GTI vs R now I have driven both.  My GTI PP was an amazing car and I never understood what people mean't when they said it was great 8/10ths of the time in regards to performance.  Well that was until i got in my R.  Now I completely understand.  I coated my wheels with C5 wheel armour yesterday, so my back feels broken now.  Time to recover I think.

The Carbon Fibre Mirror Caps really do finish the look of the car.  It is real carbon fibre, not vinyl and you really can see it, as it's that noticeable. There was one potential fault with the car yesterday.  The reverse camera didn't come out later in the day when I put the car in reverse.  This happened a few times in a row then I managed to get it to activate and it has been Ok ever since when i have tested.  Will keep an eye on that.

I have to drive the car to work today, for all the prying eyes to have a look at the car and say I am paid too much and how little they are paid in comparison.  It really is quite a bore when you have people at work going on all the time about how little they are paid and valued compared to you.  I keep wanting to say to them get educated and/or change your job and save your money rather than keep on at me about it.  I am paid not much more than they are if at all, it is just a case that I save every penny and don't drink etc,. The car is my vice so the speak.

Will post pics and comments soon

I'm sure most of us on here get similar comments about our cars.
I try and keep mine as low profile as possible and rarely tell many people when I'm changing cars but as usual the jungle drums will spread word and I get all sorts of people comment on the car. There's the obvious sniping from certain quarters, probably those that spend £20+ a day on cigarettes and skive off half the shift in the smoking area where all the gossip happens. Then there's the really random comments such as only this morning when I was helping an agency driver who's not even based at my office with his fuel paperwork. I'd just popped out to fill up the kettle for a colleague who was busy and saw the driver mystified by the paperwork, I quickly told him how to fill it in and out of the blue he said "ere, you drive a sporty car I'm told, watch your speed on the way home as there's an unmarked white Evo parked up down the road..."
I stood there and wondered how on Earth he'd know what car I had, so people obviously do talk about such things when you're not around but to hear it from a guy who only pops in once in a blue moon seems really random!!
He's not the first person who doesn't even work at the office to mention it but certainly the most unexpected.

But yes, turn up in a new car and suddenly you're surrounded by life experts who have immediately analysed your entire financial position and will rarely have anything positive to say to your face never mind behind your back.
That's forgotten the second you sit behind the wheel and all the controls fall to hand, the beautiful blue dial lighting glows back at you and a smile spreads across your face...

I know what you mean with the jungle drums and people you are least expecting to know you have a flash car making comments.  It also gets me how they instantly think we are going to be reckless and speed all the the time.  But anyway rant over, I have my flash car now and it's awesome stuff.  I cannot get over how great it looks.  I saw the sun shining on the mirror caps this lunch time and you can see the carbon fibre weave shining up.  I cannot get over how silky smooth the gear changes are.  When I had my GTI PP as new the gears were quite tight and clunky.  Then over time they loosened up a bit.  But my Golf R has a really silky smooth gear change.  I am also impressed with the DCC and Nav Pro MIB 2 unit.  It really is a big improvement over the MIB 1 unit I had in my GTI PP.

The gear change was one of the first things I noticed that felt better on the R too.

I won't drag this off topic anymore though but it is good hearing people's thoughts when they finally collect their shiny new cars.
