  1986 GTI 8v K-jet
so she will not start , i renewed the fuel pump relay 2 days ago & thought i had fixed it

got recovered home yesterday , the mechanic said he thought it was the hall sensor in the dizzy
this morning i followed the green haynes manual , diagnostic on the ignition
it says that there should be 5v on the outer two connections of the plug
yet i have 12v ?anybody know what controls this voltage ?

despondent & getting to the stage after 15 years ownership of giving up

There is an ignition amp on the bulk head under the small left hand black plastic cover. Drivers side, try replacing that first, mine I noticed a while ago now that the Speedo started jumping around whilst I was driving, the next day it wouldn't start, no spark and that was the fault.
