Paint chipped brake caliper
« on: 11 June 2016, 14:10 »
When I ordered my GTD I chose the sport & sound pack pretty much for the red brake calipers, I've just finished washing the car and while I was doing it I noticed one of the calipers has what I presume is a stone chip and a chunk of the red paint has come off. I've only had the car since April the 9th, would I be expecting a bit too much to expect the dealer to sort it out?? I've not even done 2000 miles, if they are chipping already I dread to think what they will be like after 20000 miles

Might be worth trying but to be honest can't see you getting very far. Just one of those annoying things in life. Being that it is the caliper, should touch up easily without being noticeable?

I'm on 20k miles and don't have any chips on my S&S calipers so maybe they weren't coated properly?
I even blast them with the power washer and they withstand that.
There is no harm in asking but it would probably be easier to fix it yourself.

Often chips on brake calipers are a result of wheels being carelessly refitted after removal.
I would just buy a red touch in stick to make it 80% better, the brake dust will hide the rest.

The car's still well within warranty surely?

Go and speak to the warranty Manager.

The car is under warranty, but its unlikely to be covered by warranty, only "good will" at best. The same as a stone chip on the bonnet isn't covered.  However this caliper paint chip is VERY unlikely to be from a stone chip and more often than not it will be the fitting and removal of wheels as clubsport says.  But its proving that in the conversation with the dealer.

I have 1 2mm stone chip on the caliper, self inflicted when removing the wheels last year. I bought a touch up stick of VW tornado red, its not a perfect match but its red, and after a week of driving you don't see it between the brake dust and road grime, unless yours is a massive 5mm or bigger I would just use a paint stick.

Agree with what ur saying but ultimately if the caliper turns out to be defective then it will be covered under warranty.

Let the warranty Manager decide.

Don't be surprised if the dealer says this isn't covered under warranty; they're likely to maintain it's a paint chip caused by an external factor, rather than a paint defect.

I found a paint chip on one of my calipers shortly after I got the car. I just bought some high temp Tornado Red caliper paint off eBay and sorted it myself.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Volkswagen-Gti-Red-Caliper-Paint-OE-Colour-Tornado-Red-Golf-Polo-/282055278285?hash=item41abcdfecd

I cleaned the affected area and applied 3 coats of paint with a small artists brush, allowing it to dry between coats. Colour match is very good and I've got plenty of paint to sort any future chips, or even repaint the callipers if that becomes necessary, longer term.
