Replacement Rear Beam
«

I've spotted this on eBay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221544809422?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2648&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
But it says it doesn't fit GTI's. Is this correct, as in are there different rear beams depending on whether the car had rear discs or not? I thought all rear beams were the same and it's the hubs that allow the fitting of disc brakes instead of drums..?

Mk2 beams are the same. Just need the s shaped looking bit of.metal that the hose and pipe meet at.

Can one not be fitted to it or is it missing the mounting points from the roll bar?

pretty sure the anti-roll bar is part of the axle and can't be removed. why not use the mk3 gti axles for the wide track? or use a standard rear axle fitted with an aftermarket arb.

Well, I am planning to fit H&R anti roll bars anyway, so I could get this and fit my new roll bar to it anyway? I had considered the wide track option, seems like while I'm replacing everything it may be the better option.

personally I would go for the wide track with some decent springs/shocks. it's got to be easier finding a less corroded mk3 axle than a mk2 one. the h+r anti-roll bars will be tuned to work alongside the original ones so if the original rear arb is missing it might put the balance of the car out.

Ah, very interesting that, thanks for that. Wide track and 5-stud conversion looks like the way ahead then... So if I use a mk3 Golf GTI/VR6 rear beam and mk3 ARB, I'll be alright?

The stub axles are about the same as long as they are rear disc versions. Some Mk2 versions don't have the hole for the ABS sensors which is the only difference. You could bin the tapered bearing in favour of Polo 6N2/Lupo setup.
As regards for the VR6 'plus axle', same as the Mk3 GTI.
