I have this in the R and I've found it works very well. That said it's ages since I drove anywhere much at night. Sure it's still bright up to 10pm these evenings

Only me that did not spec it again then!  To be fair, as its a cheap option, its probably best to take it and then decide for yourself.

Something I found out when I had it is that it only works when you select auto lights so if you want to revert to the old fashioned manual stalk turn the headlight switch to the headlights on position.

I recently ticked virtually all boxes on the options list for my Golf R, but High Beam Assist was one of the options I did not.  So You are not the only one mate.   

I suspect it might be a good option to have, but felt in my neck of the woods, the type of driving and time of day I would be driving, it would not be used very much.

I just leave my lights on auto... works just fine except for one condition - daytime fog - when the light level sensor is fooled by the white fog...

Me too - lights always on auto.  Currently in a courtesy car (Skoda Fabia) and have to remind myself to switch the lights on as doesn't have an auto setting.
