Irish R owner here. If I lived in the UK I would 100 percent be pursuing buying the car in Ireland. The dealer can spec mph clocks.

The price Joe quoted there includes an Irish tax (VRT)which is not applicable in the UK.  The tax is 28%, so knock 28% off that price. You would essentially be buying a new unregistered car that you would need to register yourself in the UK. Worth a phone call to a dealer or two anyway.

I just specced a car up on VW.ie and it comes to €48,000. So are you saying I take 28% off that price and then convert in to Sterling, works out about £26k if my maths is correct
Plus I noticed on the site they do PCP for 1.2% APR
Current: MK7 Golf R (Limestone Grey) DSG, 19 Prets, Winter Pack, Rear Camera, High Beam Assist, Apple Connect, Gloss Black Mirrors
Gone: MK7 Golf R (Tornado Red) DSG, Winter Pack, Keyless, Gloss Black Mirrors
Gone: MK7 Golf GTD (Pure White)

Yeah that's it. However when I enquired with the Irish revenue how much VRT was paid on my car it was less than 28%. Not sure why, it was still around and 11k euro though. So the dealer only gets about 35k euro.

Google Irish VRT for more info on it.

But would you need to add UK VAT to the Irish price net of VRT when the car is imported into the UK and would there be any other import duties / taxes to pay?

PCP here is 1.9% (it was zero % for a while earlier this year)... but there's no way a non-ROI resident would get that PCP rate. I'm pretty sure they'd cover themselves, that would be for Irish residents only.

Also, the volkswagen.ie configurator is completely pants... don't rely on it for accurate specs or prices. The product guide is a better more accurate guideline:  http://www.volkswagen.ie/content/medialib/vwd4/ie/pdf-downloads/product-guides/golf-gti-gtd-product-guide/_jcr_content/renditions/rendition.download_attachment.file/product-guide-golf-a6-gti---gtd_july.pdf

I believe so but the Irish vat negates this as it's not payable. I think the Irish rate is 23% and UK 20% so another saving potentially.

Yeah this would only work for cash buyers. You also would need to convince the Irish dealer. The car won't be regged in Ireland so they won't get their stat for sales targets.

2nd June press release extract:

"A (further) breath of fresh air is the addition of an allergy filter to the 2Zone electronic air conditioning system, and this is now standard across the Performance Golf and Performance Golf Estate ranges (GTI, GTD, GTE, R and Alltrack models).

Driving further into the range, the Golf R and the Golf Estate R now include the Discover Navigation infotainment system, with Car Net Guide and Inform, factory fitted as standard.  In addition, both R models now come equipped with heated front seats, headlight washers and heated windscreen washer jets. That’s an extra £1145 of equipment for only a £500 addition to the on-the-road price.  Thus, the Golf R starts from £31,685 RRP OTR and the Golf Estate R is £34,455 RRP OTR."

So if they increase the on the road price by £500 for the Winter Pack and Sat Nav to be standard I can see the dealers saying they cannot give me back a rebate for these options when I configured at cost back in April for my car as the on the road price of my order was less so in effect I would be paying for the options no matter what i do.  Although I am only paying for the Winter Pack as I have specced Nav Pro

Something that do use in present GTD but actually never took as an option in the R has apparently been thrown in with the Sat Nav and Winter Pack and that is the through loading on the rear seats.

Should be standard anyway you would think with the above items on a premium vehicle, but as these have been addressed by VW now then will just be happy it has

I think the through load feature is standard on the R just like the GTI. Has been for quite sometime.
