Rear tyre wear

Just about to scrap my BS's on the rear.

At 46k miles, they still have reasonable tread depth across most of the width (nowhere near the wear bars!) but both have worn really badly on the inside shoulders.

Lease company not interested in getting 3d alignment sorted but what would cause this? Is it dangerous? Anyone else seen it?

I guess they don't care because it has less than a year on the lease left and based on the BS's, the next set will last longer than the end of the lease.

What pressure are you running them at and how often do you check it?

Inside shoulder wear used to be from poor alignment on mk5 based cars but I think it's just the Bridgestones to be honest.

Fair bit of negative camber on the rear, which, coupled with "gentle" cornering, could account for it. At 46K miles, even on the rear, I don't think I'd be complaining!

Negative camber by itself does not cause massively uneven wear unless the amount of camber is extreme. Excessive wear on the inside shoulders of the tyres is more likely to be combination of camber and toe-out - this combination can cause the inside edges of tyres to wear out in a few thousand miles.

Although over 46K miles its not surprising to see this effect even running small amounts of negative camber, especially if you do plenty of motorway miles...

What pressure are you running them at and how often do you check it?

I vary them from the normal load to heavy load values quite often. Several times a month I have to take an entire car load of work equipment to Wales so pump them up for that.

I don't think its an inflation problem.

Anyway, this morning KwikFit have swapped them over.... for more BS's... (bangs head)

If you regularly check pressures something must be off at the back. My rears are wearing evenly across the full width. Unless you have the R then the rears are just pulled around so wear should be minimum.

If they're only going on one edge then it is very unlikely to be tyre pressures in any case.

Given the mileage on the ones that came off... I suspect that there is no significant problem - aggressively incorrect geometry would wear the tyres badly in a few thousand miles.
