Wing mirror cap popped out

Anyone know how these things go back in?

I was washing the car this morning and noticed the cap has more or less popped right out.
Its strange considering the mirrors fold automatically so are out the way and my wife is adamant she never hit anything

Looks like I might have to take the whole thing off to reassemble it correctly 

And looking closer at it, there is a mark underneath but not with being consistent with a wing mirror hitting something at speed.

Can't see the photos as I'm at work. If the mark isn't consistent with hitting something at speed, would it be so if the mirrors were folded (IE, did something hit it at speed)?

They are pretty sturdy so can't see how it could just pop out!   Maybe foul play??  Someone tried to prise it off?   Or as said something hitting it if it was parked up with mirrors folded in, causing it to pop out? Maybe give the Mrs the benefit of the doubt this one time.

I Had to remove it properly which was really easy, before I could put it back on.

There is definitely a mark on the lower part but if the car was parked you would imagine the door would also be damaged.

I'll let her off this one time since its all sorted
