I would have said exclusivity. The same as you only get Lapiz on the R.
I know the R is the top of the tree but its a bit like the alloys, the R doesn't have any right to have the GTD/I alloys.
Same as the paint.
That's how I see it.

Lapiz Blue.  Not only does it look amazing, but its the only exclusive R colour - and given the R's stealth like looks, it's the only colour that stands out at a glance

Just out of interest, in the long life of this board does anyone know why CSG is not an optional colour for the R?

Other colour are available across the range so why exclude that particular one? is it just manufacturing and they have to drop one colour to bring in Lapiz?
I was behind a Golf TDI GT today and it looked like it was carbon grey but obviously couldn't be, so I'm assuming it was non-metalic black or Urano grey.
The whole carbon grey 'R' debate is crazy, it simply should be available. Just because the letters GT aren't in it's title, doesn't mean it shouldn't have that colour option

I enquired before I bought my current car and any colour is available from over 50 colours that VW offer, the only drawback is the cost, in 2010 it was £2000 extra, but if you really want a colour!!!!!!

The R has "traditionally" had a signature blue colour as it was/is the Volkswagen Motorsport colour. Plus the blue clashes a bit with the GTI red in some people's eyes so therefore VW give the GTI/D a different signature colour which is dark grey. That possibly nods back towards Atlas Grey and the grey works superbly with the red accents.

Adding red accents is posssibly one of the few ways you could make Lapiz blue look any worse than it already does
I know it's a very popular colour with the 'R' crowd  and when it's a swirl free and gleaming, it's just about passable to be fair

I get this occasional feeling that you're not the biggest fan of Lapiz from time to time.
Just a hunch, call me perceptive and all that...

Whatever gave you that idea?
I need to lay of it to be fair. Colour choice  is a very personal thing and some people love blue cars.
I remember seeing a blue car that I liked once, I think it was a 911 in like a china blue. It was on a megafactories episode from a few years back

I think VW have got it right on this occasion - Lapiz signature for the R (though personally not my favourite as not big on blue cars); and Carbon Grey for the GTI/GTD.  As said, Lapiz and the red stripe and accents not a good combination and quite a way down the road to tackyville.  And with red footwells....  Carbon Grey and red made for each other but works equally (if not better) well with silver accents, which means it would also work well on the R, but I can understand the logic of not offering it for the R.

Now I've always loved Carbon Grey, but (DBP aside), if I was to choose another colour for an R, even if CG was available on the R, I would pick LSG or RS.

You'd get away with either colour because you keep them superbly. Not sure how appealing a dirty, dull LSG would be.
The one I saw in the dealers showroom when I collected mine was stunning to be fair.
