Overheated GTI
« on: 04 April 2016, 20:28 »
After driving home from work (30 min journey in steady moving traffic, not reaching above 50mph) a warning appeared on the dash stating  "revs limited to under 4000" and the temperature gauge was mm from the red.

Popped the bonnet and water and oil levels were both normal, the water was red hot.

No strange noises from the engine, any idea what it could be? Water pump?

Also was the radiator cooling fan on?I would have thought it would have stayed on even when you turn the ignition off if it was that hot.

Yeah coolant doesnt seem to have dropped. I believe the mk6's were prone to water pump failure but not sure in the 7's or even if it is that. My nearest dealer is less than half a mile from work, which takes me less than 10 minutes in a morning. Gonna risk driving to work tomorrow then phone the dealers

Thermostatic valve failure or water pump failure so the water was trapped and not flowing nicely around the engine block? Too late to tell now but how hot was the expansion tank's contents? If it was relatively cool then a lack of circulation is likely the culprit.

Did your oil temp creep up slowly or normally (usually when the water gets to temp, the oil is only a mile away from registering at 50C, and  then creeps up.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

The expansion tank contents were hot. I didnt notice how quick the temp crept up. The only reason I noticed was because the MFD warned me of limited revs 😶

Just got back from work in my courtesy Up (beast).
Apparently the thermostat housing was leaking over the actuator?
Theyre awaiting parts, gotta wait till Thu to collect.
Thanks for the replies folk 👍
Ps I must have been mistaken about the radiator fan being on.

I had the same problem 2 weeks ago. It was diagnosed as a cracked thermostat housing and replaced under warranty. Vehicle has done 18k miles
