The GTI has a bit less torque than the GTD but is lower geared. Low gearing is a torque multiplier (obviously) when transmitting power to the road it's like the GTI is half a gear lower than the GTD but also revs higher. Which is my overly complicated way of saying that in real terms the GTI has as much torque as a GTD at most speeds and at higher revs it has more.
A rolling 'in gear' test would have been interesting as we've all seen the company car GTD drivers in real life absolutely blasting it out of motorway speed restrictions; they don't hang about!!
I think the GTD did so well off the line despite its torque theoretically handicapping it with wheel spin because it was manual so the driver could modulate the throttle better than the DSG's in sport mode. Obviously once rolling the higher revving patrols and much quicker gear shifting sees the other two move ahead.
It was pretty dramatic how fast the DSG R actually is - until you see it up against the other cars they drag raced it against! Puts it all in perspective!
The Porsche and McLaren were amazing, not so long ago only Superbikes and Atoms would accelerate that quickly.
