I have a question.
« on: 23 March 2016, 06:20 »
Hi All,

I have already asked this question in another discussion and was advised to put the question in the MK2 forum.

Hi all,

New to the forum and been into Golf's and Classic VW's for as long as I can remember. I currently own a 84 MK2 Golf GL 1.6. (EZ Engine)

I have a question and I hope someone can help. I have fitted a Malpassi Filter/Regulator, new fuel pump & vapour pot. The Filter/Regulator has a place where I can fit a pressure gauge however I don't seem to be getting a reading from the gauge. The gauge does work as I have tested it by using an air pump. All the fuel lines are hooked up and secure but for some reason when when the gauge is fitted I don't get a reading. I'm  out of ideas as to what it could be so any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is running on a weber 32/34 DMTL if that helps

Cheers

Does the gauge go low enough to show you what the pressure is, if you're gauge is for a fuel injected car then the pressure in a fuel system using carbs may not be high enough. Fuel injection requires a high fuel pressure and carburetors require a low pressure. Maybe you're gauge is suitable for an injection system.
Thats just a possibility from the information you have given. I'm not saying that is the problem as I don't know what gauge your trying to fit.

Ive had a think on what I said in the other section.
As above.
For instant if your guage starts at 1 bar it wont move because a carb only uses half a bar normally.

Thanks guys.

The gauge came with the unit when I purchased it and others have reviewed it as decent for the job.

I have done some further research and it is something to do with the fuel pump and not enough pressure from a mechanical pump (which is what I have installed.) A mechanic friend of mine also embalmed some wisdom for me. (looks like weber 40s and a few other bits are on my shopping list )

again thanks for the help.

Have you installed this thing in the position the normal fuel filter would go; before the fuel pump?

If so I'm not surprised you get no reading, because there's no pressure at that point. The mechanical pump effectively sucks the fuel out of the tank, and the only place where you'd see a few psi of pressure is after the pump.

Looks like a damn expensive replacement for a £2 filter!

I figured that out after doing some research. However I will be making some changes in the future and will replace the mechanical pump for an electric one and change to weber 40s.

So all is not lost
