Really not a fan of any of these SUV style vehicles. They're all fugly.

I guess that depends on whether you have the 'need' for one.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Quite like the look of this.
Might have a look at it to replace the Mrs's GTI.
Will depend on price and spec of course.
The page is on VW's webpage but is in the forthcoming models bit.

By 'need' I assume you mean need more space?
The fact that people buy them when most of them offer no more room than a standard car I find strange.
A lot of people I know personally, have one child and buy a people carrier!

There's a reason small SUVS are beating traditional shapes in sales for family cars. They can be more practical, even if they have no more space

Two examples:

Raised suspension/ride height - less grounding out over speed bumps/road humps.car park entrances, and easier to lift kids in and out.

Elevated driving position - better visibility at junctions for the driver

Its all a con. As you say most offer no extra room over a standard car and some feel rather cramped in space

I much prefer estates hence why I bought one!!

Agree with all these comments. Some people seem to like these SUVs though, including my parents who just got a 2015 Qashqai, which I pointed them towards, as they wanted that sort of car and were looking at a Kuga. Nice enough as the Qashquai is, and has plenty of toys on board, I don't think it really offers little, if any more space inside than the golf, and I don't like the driving position of being high up - I had a quick go in it, and then jumped back in the GTD, and it felt like I was sitting on the ground in comparison!

Had the new tiguan come out 6 months to a year earlier I would have pointed them towards getting one of them, but the current tiguan just looks a bit out of date inside and out.

The point of suv's for most is the driving position ie higher up and also access. The current tiguan in facelift guise is still a good looking car and the inside is exactly the same as mk 5 and 6 golfs just updated but it's proven. Tiguan feels a lot sturdier and solid than the mk7 gtd i had so i hope the new version doesn't go all flimsy on the mqb platform.

I'd like one for it's towing capabilities. My Passat estate does a good job, but does lack the weight required to keep a bigger trailer or caravan in check. A higher driving position and larger mirrors also give much better visibility when reversing a trailer.

A proper 4x4 would be the best tool for the job, but the running costs when being used as a normal car would be too much of a compromise.

I'd forgotten about what good towing capabilities the Tig had as it wasn't part of the criteria when I purchased it. The total lack of wheelspin was something I hadn't bargained for as previous (FWD) cars could manage that in third gear depending on the conditions. Likewise the raised seating position is good but I don't particularly miss that when driving in the other car - a 5er.

Just as an aside and even though I've got notifications set up, I don't seem to be getting any at all! Is that normal?

I get thread notifications through ok on this forum (but not some others) but PM notifications don't come through.
I think you may just have to persevere with the settings a bit, maybe clear cache and history etc out and try again.
Love the Mustang pic in your other post. Every time I go past a Ford dealer I just want to go in and try one just for the hell of it!
