The Ipod definitely does power down after a while. When I open my car up I hear mine chirp as it powers up.

I've had my Ipod Touch permanently connected for 2 years now, its not caught fire :D

On the other hand, the SD cards are easier to use than a pesky ipod anyway and I mainly use those.

On my CC when I unlock/open the door I can hear the iPhone I use for some of my music start charging. I'm assuming the Mk7 Golf is the same. The ignition doesn't need to be on. I think it stops the power to it after 30 minutes.

Mine is the old system with an RNS510

Definitely as above. I'm sure I read somewhere its so the head unit is up to speed by the time you put the ignition on. Especially if it has a hard drive in it as it can take a few seconds to initialize.

To the op try sitting in it and locking it and see if the ipod powers down.

The question reminds me of checking the bulb in the fridge actually goes out when you shut the door

I don't use my iPod much any as I use my phone via CarPlay but when I did, it definitely powered down as when the ignition is switched on, after a few secs it made a pinging noise as it 'woke up'.

How did you check it? It powers on as soon as the car is unlocked, the key doesn't need to even be in the ignition.

Ha ha ha right that is me stopping being anal about it, i didnt realise that simply unlocking the car would power it up? I drove a honda civic for 8 years where unlocking it simply unlocked it....

It would seem ive got a lot to learn about my new car
