Mobile phone question
« on: 17 March 2016, 16:45 »
Bit of a strange question, but will all the new connectivity with the new MIB II systems, I'm able to get a second Sim from EE for a separate mobile phone, which I will pay for, to work alongside my works supplied mobile (an Iphone 6). Reason for this is the data allowance is being capped at work and they are looking more at private calls etc. in a bid to reduce our company global phone bill (over 18,500 mobile phones !).

The Iphone will still be my default phone in the car, but as it can now have two phones connected at once was looking for an Android based phone so that I have have the best of both worlds - Apple Car play with the Iphone and Mirror Link / Android Auto with the other phone.

Now as the other phone will essentially not get as much use, and will be mainly the data source for the App connect system, I'm not going to spring for a top of the line jobbie (like a Samsung Galaxy S7 for instance), so looking at a decent Android unit for around the £100-150 mark, that will work fully with the aforementioned protocols, but in addition also allow bluetooth contact photos to show.

Don't mind if it's last year tech so long as it works, and would even consider a decent 2nd hand unit. Any thoughts of what I should be looking at ? I've been an iphone for years with work so don't know much at all about the "other side"

Thanks

I would say that AndroidAuto does slightly more CarPlay (just upgraded to an S7 from an iPhone 6).

This handset may be slightly over budget but a few people at work have them and they great handsets -

You could also look at the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 (Can be unlocked for £20)

Reviews have been pretty solid on this handset.  High specs for a low price point.

Another one to look at is the Huawei P8 Lite which like the Vodafone Smart Ultra 6 gives your decent specs for not a lot of money.

Hope this helps :)

Why do 2 of your links go to http:/go.redirectingat.com/?id=  Are they affiliate links?

@Soot you can check compatibility here http://webspecial.volkswagen.de/telephony/?culture=en_GB&embedmode=iframe
My old Samsung Galaxy S3 shows contact pictures no problem so I would guess any android device would be fine.

No idea... I simply copied and pasted the URLs from the websites.  Must be something to do with how the forum handles the URLs.

Andrew get yourself a samsung galaxy s4. Works an absolute treat on my tiguan unit and had no issues at all with nav pro on golf.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

Just bagged myself a dirt cheap mint condition Samsung Galaxy S5, so hopefully that will work.

Just slightly off topic, I just read on another forum that when I for instance connect my Iphone and run Apple Car Play, that this disables bluetooth completely, and so any second phone which might have been connected is disconnected.

Is that the case ? I assume therefore when app connect is running, it does the phone functions via USB (so you are actually still connected hands free) ?

Is that the same when using Mirrorlink or Android Auto - i.e. those protocols also shut down the bluetooth system as well ?

I can only speak about CarPlay but it is fact that any currently running BT connections are cancelled as soon as you connect the phone via USB and CarPlay is launched.  App-connect can only be accessed via USB connection not via BT.  As you say all phone functions are then accesses via AC.

As soon as you plug your phone in you get 2 messages to warn you that BT connections are being cancelled and that any BT device can no longer be used as a media source:

And if you press the phone button on the head unit whilst running AC you get this message:

One thing I forgot to say is that when using AC it has also cancelled any BT ipod connections running, so am pretty sure it would cancel a second phone BT connection.
