Rattle/Scutter from B pillar
« on: 15 March 2016, 14:52 »
My R has developed the same issue I had on my MK7 GTI in that there is now a scuttery noise coming from the B pillar - right behind my right ear so its difficult to ignore.

The dealer never managed to fix this issue on my GTI has anyone else had this and if so have you found a cure.

No amount of pushing or pulling the trim while on the move stops it so I am guessing it is something inside the Pillar but I am not ripping the car apart to try and find unless there is a known cure.

Happens on any road surface except the very rare billiard smooth road.

Just a guess, but there is the button for the alarm sensor deactivation at the bottom of the B pillar trim that will obviously have a wiring harness going to it. Could it be this rattling away ?

Either that or the seat belt / tensioner assembly ?

Could it be the outside trim finisher on the door? Do you perhaps slam the door shut more than others?

Btw I'm not in any way saying you have an anger management problem

The rubber / felt door seals might need lubrication. Does the noise go away if you lower the window a tiny bit? Very common issue if it's that. There's various products you can use to lubricate those seals, best is probably "krytox", available on eBay / the dealers but it's pricey.

I had something similar on my Mk6. It turned out to be the sun visor but sounded like it was coming from the B-pillar.

As above.

VW Krytox (DuPont GPL-105 lubricant oil) from TPS - part no. G052172A1. Use on all door seals and felts, is a good starting point. Had terrible rattles, squeaks in my 6GTI coming from A and B pillars and a single application of Krytox silenced them for good. Pricey (was £28 + VAT a few years back) for a 30ml bottle but a little goes a very long way - 1/3 of the bottle will do all seals. Best applied with fingertips.

I was given a tin of it from a dealer for the window seals on my CC and it was the only thing I found to fix the problem. With the CC not having door frames it was doing my nut in every time I unlocked the car especially because all four Windows drop and it sounded like a pig squealing.

A tin?  Was it the grease form (DuPont GPL- 205) or the oil (GPL- 105)?  The oil is supposedly the better one for the door seals. It's very very good stuff.  Originally produced for the VW EOS which had terrible leaky roof seal problems. I will always have a bottle in the store cupboard.  Much better than Gummi Pflege which I found didn't last and if it gets wet runs all down paintwork and is a pig to get off - rubbish stuff.

It was the oil they gave me. I should have said can, it's an Irish thing. Works great on door hinges(house) as well.

Have used a Silicon rubber lubricant which worked well on my old Octavia but makes no difference to the noise when applied on the R door seals - on my GTI the dealer repositioned the alarm harness to no avail, opening the window a crack just deafens me.
