yeah all the lights come on and the radio works...they do not dim when I crank it as there is no spark going to the starter(or so I assume) A few days ago it started just barely...thought it was the battery but it is not as fired up the passat easily when I dropped the battery into it...also tried another battery...no luck...I note that the central locking may be a bit sluggish....some sort of power drain somewhere...this is what happens to old cars....:(

I had the relay on my passat preventing me from starting the car...had to press it manually for awhile until the car started behaving after an oil change. I am not sure if the old autos have some sort of kill switch if the oil is not good enough...I doubt this but would rather not change the oil on the golf if I can avoid it...does anyone know the relay for the automatic that primes the starter???could try to open it and then open and close the circuit manually and see if that will start the car...:)

You probably have an inhibitor switch on the gearbox somewhere that stops it from starting whilst it's in drive or reverse.

Try going through all gears back and forth quite quickly a few times and try again.

Well that relay clicks so if I can find out which one it is I can fool the ecu.and just click it manually....:)

Is this still your old mk3?
When you try to start it do you get 12V to the starter solenoid or not?
If yes then solenoid is gone (try whacking it). Otherwise look at the gear lever position sensor.

Will give it a go on the weekend. I assume that I bridge the solenoid from 50 to positive terminal with the key in the on position.
Any idea what relay is the kill switch for the gear switch position sensor? It was relay 150 on the Passat auto (spot 14)
