This happened on the wife's Golf yesterday. It's a 2000 plated 1.6.

Luckily it happened in the car park she was going to park up in in town. She nursed it in to a bay after it'd cut out & went to town.
When she came to drive home later on, the engine light was still on the dash but it started up & seemed to drive ok she said.

There's plenty of oil in there - it's about 2/3 the way up the MIN-MAX on the dipstick.

Did a bit of googling which seemed to suggest it could be one of many things. Oil pump, some speed sensor to name 2.

I plugged in VagCom (still getting used to that thing) & ran a couple of scans...

On the topic of the speed sensor which we read about when researching this, this was one code...

All codes have now been cleared but haven't yet taken the car for a run.

Help very much appreciated.

On a side note.....

how can you tell if the Golf is a 16v or an 8v engine?

We bought it having been told it was a 16v.

I don't know how many of you have the MyCarCheck app for iPhone but i have the (old) version where it still gives you plenty of info.

Now when i check my own car reg it says:

Cylinders: 4
Valves/Cyl: 4

I'm assuming this is multiplied to give the 16v which my car is.

When i check the wifes reg...

Cylinders: 4
Valves/Cyl: 2

Which would be 8 if that's how you work it out.

How do you know for 100%? Just out of curiosity.

I assume you mean for the 8v/16v thing?
Anyway it's AZD & says 77kw.

Drove it to town (about 2 mile) & then to my mothers (about 5 mile) & then back today & no lights came on.

It is making a noise from the alternator belt. My brother reckons up the adjuster needs replacing as his Golf had the same issue.

If it is this speed sensor, where is that located & do you know of a part number for it?

Maybe worth looking at the crankshaft sensor if the car cut out whilst driving. Had this problem with my V5

AZD should be the 16v variant
