I was just thinking that, if this were to happen to me, in the rush and panic of nicking my car I doubt that the thieves would worry about putting on the seat belt, so would they know how to release the electronic hand brake? There would be a brief period of standing around, bemused as I watched someone trying to pinch my motor!

Can you not just drive away without disengaging the parking brake? I never disengage mine, it does it automatically when I pull away.

It doesn't disengage automatically when you pull away IF the driver hasn't put their seatbelt on. No seatbelt means that you have to manually disengage it.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Did you hear/disturb them?.They say it's a good idea to keep your house keys seperate from your car keys to stop a 'double whammy' of chaos, cost and worry.

Its now changed. You can drive away without engaging the seatbelt or engaging it manually with your foot on the brake. I don't know when the changes took place but remember reading about it on here and our new GTI is also like that.
