Advanced Phone Prep (APP) question ?
« on: 11 March 2016, 13:16 »
Hi all, with my new car build, I've ordered the advanced phone prep this time (to get the climate windscreen). Previously when ordering my current car, I looked into the APP, and as far as I could see, the USB socket in the armrest was for charging only and didn't have any data connections.

Well I've just been reading the "Passat 2015 Infotainment and Car-Net" self study guide, and under Phone kits, it has this to say about the "comfort" phone system (as It's otherwise known)

"If the vehicle is equipped with a „Comfort” mobile telephone interface, this will have two Apple compatible USB connections and one AUX-IN connection.
The additional USB connection can be found in the storage compartment of the center console in the area in front of the selector lever.

The USB distributor R293 is used to ensure that two data-enabled USB connections function correctly. It enables the connection of two USB sockets on the USB connection of the control unit 1 for information electronics J794.

With this configuration, the Apple authentication chip is integrated into the USB distributor R293.

U37 - additional USB connection - USB charging socket 1 (data-enabled)
R199 - USB connection Media in - Connection for external audio sources"

It certainly looks like on the Passat at least, both USB sockets are data enabled. Is this also true of the 2016 Golf, or do we still just have one data enabled USB socket (in the forward cubby), and one in the center console that is charge only (no data) ?

^^ The arm rest would be much easier as the USB in what would be the ashtray is a nightmare to get in and out. I don't know what they were thinking when they put it there.

Can someone explain what this advanced phone prep is?

I just bought a 15 plate Golf GTI used and I am picking it up in a few days time.  Do I need to get them to prep my phone with the car or something?

Do I also get one of those MDI cables because when I test drove it, there was just the MDI socket there!

If the car has a heated windscreen (has a slight reddish tinge) it will come with advance phone prep. I don't believe there are any additional features but I stand to be corrected.

Advanced phone prep is an option that can be specified over and above standard Bluetooth that comes with the car as standard (so yes, your phone will work no problem).

Most people (like me), who spec it do so to gain access to the heated windscreen option, which VW will not allow you to spec on its own without APP! As apparently the coating in the climate window screen impedes the mobile sigh al somewhat and that's what APP does.

Basically it gives you an additional data and power USB socket in the armrest chubby (under the tilting cover), as well as the one ahead of the gear lever in the forward cubby.

In addition to the extra socket APP also provides an induction plate that when you slip the phone into the armrest cubby connects the phone remotely to the cars aerial to give you a signal boost for your cell signal ( to get back what you may have lost with the windscreen).

Weird thing is, in other markets, climate windscreen can be specced without APP ( or comfort phone preparation as it's known on the continent), so not sure how much signal it actually blocks?
