That's pretty much a perfect spec - apart from one glaring omission - DSG!  I'd scrap the 90% tints on a 5dr DBP.  It works to great effect on some colours but is just too much on black IMO.  I have a kid and the 65% standard rear tint is fine.  And if not, there's something called sunglasses!

Couple of pics to show the standard rear tint.  The first pic gives you an idea of how much light gets cut out with the 65% tint. You can see looking at the white Fiesta ST behind, comparing it through the front windows and the tinted rears.

I was uncertain at first about the brushed silver wing mirrors on black but really like them now.  Unless you want the uber stealth look in which case go for black mirror caps - but again 90% tint would still look too much and into tacky territory on this colour, especially in 3dr.

As said the standard privacy tints on the 'B ' pillar back are fine imo but the 90% tints just look tacky.

Ah thanks Booth11 - will re-evaluate the tints then and looking at your pics the wing mirrors look good as well

+1 for 65% glass on a black car, the 90% would be too much, maybe ok on a white/silver/red.

I also used to dislike the silver mirror covers but they have grown on me and makes the R stand out.

Spotted a 16 plate DBP 5 door R yesterday as above with prets and it was stunning

I did think I'd go with the 90% tints on my next Golf, but having seen one, it makes it look like a van, especially when the car is black.

As for the R's silver mirrors, I'd do something about that if I had one, I think it makes it look cheap - especially with certain colours, such as TR.

I'd either be looking for a colour match or go with a carbon wrap.

The 95% tints are just too dark. One thing to remember about the really dark tints are that it doesn't let the auto dimming rear view mirror to work right so the side mirror doesn't dim enough or at all.

The side mirrors don't dim its just the interior mirror and the 90% tints don't affect the dimming at all.

My Mrs has the 90% tints and its not total black out as you can clearly see in it.

Not the best of picture but it still looks like its just tinted rather than full on black.
But like absolutely everything about a car it's totally subjective.

I couldn't agree more, just have them body coloured.
My white van has got black door mirrors and nobody thinks they look cool 😀

My GTD will be at end of its lease not too soon after yours and will be sad farewell really as truly love it.

But nice out of the box new is kinda fun in the choosing so embracing that at moment and have pretty much narrowed myself down to three options:

Golf R
Golf GTI (PP)
New Tiguan R Line

So interesting that you have decided to go for the R from the GTD.

Firstly I would choose Pure White on all those listed above as its a great colour for enhancing features and keeps really well throughout a year, you only know how dirty it really is when wash it.

Love blinging shining black, but would avoid black totally from previous experience of Plain and Metallic as you truly have to maintain it so much to avoid the dusty/dullness, swirls and highlighted bird mess.

Love Lapiz Blue but given have to park on road the white is more understated to the uninitiated, so as much as like the attention, it screams R too much perversely.

As for the 90% tints, definitely in the consensus here as the standard tints are perfect, easily noticed as contrast on my GTD but with some subtlety to.

On the Black Paint think you are in danger of taking the sophistication of the R into Corsa racer boy territory opposed to stealth look maybe seeking - as with all these things my subjective personal opinion.

Think the most interest that have in you moving from GTD to R is how feel on fuel consumption, as its a big leap from a GTD.

Obviously know the MK 7 Golf well now and so know that either a GTI or an R will make me very happy, it really will be down to how much fuel consumption willing to give into for that little extra

The new Tiguan looks great though in R Line form and has lots of MK 7 tech and interior feel as well as that LCD/HUD display. It also has 4 Motion and GTD power unit, so its a tempting, hugely sensible package

5 door manual - 5 door is a must if carry passengers as biggest pain ever in 3 door - DSG convert, cannot imagine not having it, DSG and Auto Hold are the perfect partners
Deep Black - Not for me for reason stated
Keyless - Not got at present, would likely spec now though
Rear view camera - Sensors are more than fine for me,
DCC - Total convert, maybe a must on R with Pretorias
19" Pretoria wheels - The best looking wheel on the R
Tinted 90% glass - Would totally avoid.

Must adds for my next are the Apple Car Play and if not standard winter pack for the heated seats

I'd love to have the GTD again as IMO its the nicest looking car as standard out of the GTI and R - but even with the GTi spec'd up to look nice (hate the standard alloys and much prefer the GTD chrome trim over red) I'd rather go for the R as private lease deals for R's are hard to turn down currently.

Recent quotes show I can get the GTI or R with more specs than my GTD for £20 less than what I'm paying now (yes, our car scheme is a rip off plus the BIK of course) so my thinking is, going from a GTD to an R - just do it whilst I have the means, no real science behind it as I won't always be able to have this choice.

I do mainly short trips in the GTD as well and the regens are averaging 3 a week so as well as not doing the GTD much good my MPG is averaging just below 40; so I'm not even thinking about this by moving all the way up to an R

I am very tempted with white as the colour too as I've seen very few MK7s in that colour around here, but I think I would be cleaning it more than black.

My wife is frowning at the thought of me behind a 300PS car as nice as it is and if I cave then it will be another GTD in carbon grey and 19s but for now my sights are set on the R

Sorry I thought the Mk7 had door mirror tinting as well, that seems a bit cheap by VW

Obviously 90% tints aren't totally black, if they were then totally black then they would be 100%

If you don't have dimming side mirrors then you probably would notice the difference that having a tinted rear window makes. I noticed the difference it makes after I had a loan of a CC without rear tints and the door mirror when down to almost completely black where as in my CC which has tints it only dims to about 50% with the same car(close neighbor with one of those HID kits that blinds everyone) behind me.
