Brake pads and discs
« on: 10 March 2016, 16:42 »
Hi guys

My 2012 mk6 GTI needs a new set of brake pads and discs (according to the dealer, who's saying there's only 30% remaining - (do I need to worrying about changing them now?)).

Can anyone recommend the cheapest place to source OEM parts? I can get the labour done cheaply by a mechanic in the family.

I've had a look at TPS and found the following:

https://tps.trade/part/braking/brake-pad-and-disc-kit/8E0098301T
https://tps.trade/part/braking/brake-pad-and-disc-kit/8P0098601P

I understood the rear discs are supposed to be 286mm, but those in the above link seem to be 272mm. Does anyone know if they're the right ones? In any case, I don't know if I can buy from TPS as a joe public?

I've had a look at oemandmore's website but there don't seem to be any mk6 parts on offer there.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Chris

You can buy from tps without a trade account. When getting parts theyll have the correct size. Well theyve never got anything wrong for me

I've been looking at Euro Car Parts, put my reg. no. in, they've got Bosch rear discs in 282mm and Pagid rears in 272mm. I've read some threads on here which suggest 282mm is the correct size for the rears, but the Pagids don't come in that size.

Have you considered performance pads/disks?

My dealer also said I was on 25% pads on the front. I was going to look at getting the EBC Red Stuff pads.

Fitting looks quite straight forward so I'm going to do it myself..

What sort of mileage do you have? A dealer told my sister she needed new rear discs and pads on her Golf GT 170 and put it as an advisory on the MOT, so we left it a year by that time she needed pads but not discs, but it was too late as we bought them so changed them any way. I used a micrometre to measure them and from the 10mm new they were down to 9mm with a minimum of 8mm, so the discs were only 50% used. So really she only needed new pads. She had 50k on the clock. This was on the rear too.

I'm on 50k. Think my disks are ok.
