Flaky bits of trim...
« on: 07 March 2016, 10:13 »
Hi folks,

My GTI turned 2 years old on 1st March and since then, some bits of interior trim have all of a sudden started to show some wear and tear.

Gearstick silver trim starting to flake...

Then on Saturday I got in the car, hit the start button and got a pin prick stabbing in my finger...

The section of foil in the 'N' started to peel off and it's pretty sharp!

Best pic I could get...

Yesterday it came away all together.

Not only this, my MDI charging cable has kicked the bucket and no longer works.

Does anybody know if all of the above are covered under warranty? Car is due it's 30,000 mile Service in the next couple of weeks so I'll be taking it up with the dealer...

I've seen people say they've had the button changed under warranty, they had the same problem as yourself.

I had the start button replaced under warranty, but the car was much newer - less than a year old. It's a well known issue, plenty of others have reported it. The lettering on the new button is redesigned, so less likely to happen on newer cars... so obviously VW are aware it's a design flaw.

My gear stick (manual) had also started to flake a bit like that after about 2 years but I was about to trade the car in so didn't bother getting that checked out.

Cheers folks. It's due its 3rd Service Pack jobby in around 800 miles so I'll have them replaced then. A little bit disappointing though, these things should surely last longer than 2 yrs/30k miles.

Interesting update for you lot...

So my car had it's 30,000 mile service yesterday and I asked the dealer (Lookers VW Preston) to look at the faulty bits of trim, and also the MDI cable which no longer works.

All pieces of trim and cable are not covered under warranty, and I would be required to pay for them. They said it was just wear and tear. I'm a little disappointed that they've only lasted 2 years before flaking off, and if I were to purchase the items it would cost me a little over £150.00 based on their quoted prices.

Not only that... I paid for a service pack when I bought the car and included in the pack is a brake fluid change included in the third service. When they sold this to me, they didn't say that it's only designed for customers who do 10,000 miles per year. I've done 15,000 miles per year, and therefore had the third service after only 2 years. The brake fluid change isn't due until 3 years old, so VW refused to carry it out. So when the fluid change needs doing after 3 years, I'll have to pay for it as I've had all 3 services under the plan (even though I've effectively paid for the brake fluid change to be carried out under the plan)...

Yet again I left a VW dealer feeling disappointed and seriously considering whether I'll ever have another.

I'd be speaking directly to VW UK now, them part maybe wear and tear issues but surely expecting them to last longer than 2 years isn't too much to ask for, as an auto it shouldn't be getting that much use so should be lasting many years before any flaking issue becomes apparent.

As for the brake fluid service, surely if you have paid for it as part of the service pack they should honour it, it shouldnt make any difference having it done now,  if you'd have asked for it to be done and were physically paying for it then I'm sure they'd have done it without question

Poor service yet again - hear so much of this nowadays.

The start button, plenty of evidence of others getting that warranty replaced on here, so what's the difference?

Service plan - nonsense. If it includes brake fluid which you don't yet need, it should be 'free' at the point you do need it. Are they suggesting that you have to do bang on 10k a year otherwise it's a waste of money? If so, they explained that all in advance of you paying for it?!

Bunch of arse.

Why doesn't this surprise me! I think they must have some training school in how to p*ss customers off in some short sighted cost saving which in the long term turns people away from the brand.
