Well..after recent events with cab..and hearing everyone else's tales of woe,ive decided i need to get a cheap run about..
wot i need from you lot is advice on insurance...cos i havent a clue whether its best gettin two seperate polices, one for cab and one for banger..or gettin cab put down as a second car  :undecided: im plannin on keepin her for best and "wrappin her in cotton wool" as Gaz says..so your only lookin at 2-3k max on mileage per year/6month on rd per yr...which comes to my second thing..
how to look after the cab throu those bleak months that shes gonna b off the road...now..puttin her in a garage is not an option...so...bodywork wise and mechinally wise..wots the best way forward?!
and anything else anyone can think of wot wud b good for me to do to/for her would be very much appreciated..

well i guess your only option for protecting cab is to get a decent car cover and to disconnect batt
some kind of security cover might be worthwhile.

multi car insurance doesnt exist outside "tradesman" type accounts.. wish it did :(

unless someone knows better..

- insure cab for low milege/classic
- insure banger for worth nothing/3rd party only

seperate policies.. you might get discount some places.. not sure..

Hi dinx, dunno if it helps but i work for hic/golf+ insurance and we could do a low mileage pol on the cab and we also offer big discounts for 2nd cars and could mirror your ncb onto the run around car. If your interested or want me to try and see what i can do then either gimme a bell on 08451 290290 and ask for me or pm me your number and i will give ya a bell. hope this helps!

On the cover issue:
Last winter my golf spent over 4months under a breathable cover form argos which cost about £20. I polished it before I put it away in november and it still looked as good when I dragged it out mid march. For the price it's a good cover, got the paint friendly soft lining and all that.
For this winter I've bought a 3x6metre party tent (the ones with enclosed sides and ends), this cost me the reasonable sum of £129.99 and will enable me to work on the car through the winter (not possible when using the cover). I bought mine at a shop called the range but they are widely available on ebay for similar money.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Dinx, I'm not sure about your parking/storage situation, but if a garage is out of question, you should look at a semi-permanent storage solution like a carcoon.

Basically, you drive you car into these things and zip them up. Plug it in and it inflates. It has a fan in it at each end, so that its ventialted, so it won't 'sweat' and rust your p&j.

I would then lookinng at covering the carcoon itself with some tarpaurlin or similar so that its not visible . It really boils down to what space you have available.

If all of this is out of the question and you have to go for a simple car cover, then go for the best you can afford, made out of a mutli-layer breathable construction. Never put the car undercover when its wet, and air it out often.

As for insurance, keep the fully-comp no claims policy running on the cab, get yourself a thir-party only second policy on your run about. This will allow you to build two lots of no claims bonus, with the cheapest possible policy.

On the insurance side bell direct will match your no claims bonus so second policy could be dirt cheap on a banger

my cousin had his £50 runabout and his corrado insured under two policies with mirrored no claims on them... seemed like a good idea.. was cheaper than insurin them separately too!?!?!?! really daft!
