Ive got a problem with my heater motor.  It only workes when I tap it a few times. Its the one located under the glovebox. How much is a new one?

I tired to open the compartment where the motor is. I cant seem to open it. I dont want to break anything.
any ideas guys?

also can someone tell me exactly what a heater matrix is? Im thinking this is the heater element?

Cheers

Its a heat exchanger similar but smaller than your radiator. It uses the heat from your engine coolant to heat the car.

Evening,

  Common on mk2's.

The heaters motors are sh!te, take the motor off from below by pushing the little tab back and turning the whole motor anti-clockwise.

You Will have to take the lower trim panel off first!
Its only held on with about 6 screws.

Try spraying some wd40 on the motor spindle to free in up,  plug it back in, and put it on speed 3 (or 4 if its a 90 spec) and let the bugger run, just to get it  freed up.

The heater matrix is built into the heater unit and is basically a miniture radiator, They do get bunged up quite easily, and even though you have to take the dash out to replace, it is not a hard job.

Oh and by the way, if your heater motor only works on full speed, its the resistor pack attached to the motor, not the motor itself. they are about ?30 new, or just rob about 5 from a scrap yard. You will need 5 because at least 4 of them will be screwed.

On the Mk1 the resistor was mounted to the heater itself. If I remember correctly the Mk2 one is mounted under the bonnet, front o/s wing area rings a bell, but I may well be wrong.

It on the motor as well on a mk2, but because the motor is in the car, so is the resistor pack. Its where the plug fits.

Mk1's have the motor mounted on the engine side of the bulkhead.

Happy to help
 ;)

If it works when you tap it, the switch itself could be faulty. Take out the radio player (if you have one) and disconnect the switch. The housing will come apart and reveal the copper contacts. Might be worth cleaning these up and making sure that each setting had continuity.
