Low speed rattle

I've been intermittently experiencing a rattle in my Mk6 when driving at low speed. Now and again, when I'm on a bumpy or uneven surface at less than 30kph I hear a rattle. It isn't very loud and it is coming from the rear. It sounds like it's coming from the boot, but there's nothing loose there and the space saver is secured as tightly as possible.

Anyone experience anything like this? Any ideas what it might be?

MK6 can suffer from quite a few rattle's, does it sound more like a small thudding noise, or more like mechanical, or metal on metal?

Neither really. When I first heard it I thought that the parcel shelf might be rattling or squeaking in its bracket, but it's rock solid. It really doesn't sound like it's metal on metal. Not a peep on the drive home, then as I reversed in the drive - rattle, rattle, rattle.

there are some many things it could be really, from the balls banging that hang on the parcel shelf, to a loose rear brake dust sheild.

Try drive with rear seats down and see if the noise is more prominent mate.

I had an annoying rattle from one of the rear seat backrest catches. Wrapping some insulating tape around the bracket that the backrest latches into cured the problem. That was nearly 4 years ago, and it's never rattled since.

If the noise disappears when you fold the back set down, this is a likely cause.

I have the same issue with my passenger side rear seat latch. Tried the insulation tape fix, worked for a couple of days but then returned. Thing the latch inside the seat is buggered on mine, so been looking for a replacement part. But yeah, try as mentioned above, dropping the rear seats. If noise goes, then its the latches at fault.

I had a rattle and it annoyed me so much...when i was getting my lowering springs fitted i was looking at the suspension and then i noticed the splash guard inside popped out and i was like THATS THE PROBLEM  that was causing the rattle...it was same like yours rattled only when bumpy..so you could give them a check

So, I spent a few hours at the weekend trying to diagnose it with no luck. I drove with the seats down and it made no difference, it actually was a little louder as I could hear it better coming from the boot area. I put some insulation tape on the latches for the back seats, but it made no difference. Took out the space saver and made sure there was nothing loose the the bay and tightened it back as hard as I could so there isn't a mm of play in it. Still rattles. I think I might put a thin strip of insulation tape on the tools on top of the space saver, just to make sure they're firmly in place.

The previous post that mentioned the splash guard is interest as it sounds like it's coming from that area, I'll be having a proper look as soon as I get home tonight. Thanks.

It's a funny one in that it only rattles at very low speed, around 10kph when on uneven surfaces. However, I can drive it down the crappiest roads at 80-100kph and it's perfect, no rattles at all. I'm perplexed

I finally diagnosed the source of the rattle, or I should say my father did! He got the boot and I drove up and down the road slowly, he had it figured out within 20 seconds - the boot door.

When he pushed against the the boot door, pushing out if that makes sense, the rattling immediately stopped and it was quiet as a mouse. When he took the pressure off again - rattle, rattle, rattle. It's a plastic on plastic sounding rattle so I assume the plastic interior of the boot door is loose/poorly fitted/rubbing. The only access I have are the removable panels for the rear lights but I can't see anything there - there isn't much to see really.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like there's a DIY fix as I can't get any access inside the boot door, I assume there are specialist tools needed. Has anyone any experience with this before I send it into the garage and have to argue that it's covered under warranty?
