Yes but it's not an option for most people.
Thieves love the dark, everyone knows that surely.

I am no expert on what thieves like, personally I am not convinced with security lights as after a while people just ignore them. You can't go out to investigate everytime they light up, particularly if there are local cats.

If thieves love the dark, how do they see?

I would think they need light, if things are suddenly lit up, even by torch light, that change from the norm can be noticed and may attract attention.

I don't know the answer, but if serious thieves want a car, I guess they will take it.

The disclock and other anti theft devices makes more sense to me as that has to take time to tackle, so may discourage the opportunist.

The whole idea of security light is so that when you look outside at night, you can see.
Serious thieves will probably not be put of by a light suddenly coming on but if I hear a noise and look out of the window. at least I can see them and hopefully that might make them think twice about stealing my car.
If you have the luxury of a garage then that's great, the thief will give you a crack as you pull into it

Agreed. Hopefully we're just worrying ourselves unduly.
I never gave security a moments thought with my A3, I was more worried about getting my van nicked as that has happened on a few occasions.
It's the fact it's a Golf GTI, they are desirable

Keep a pitbull terrier in the car overnight.  Then you can leave it unlocked.

I would think a securely locked garage with the car out of sight is the best deterrent.
Doesn't security lighting coming on all the time just highlight where the car is kept?
After a while people tend to ignore security lights and alarms going off.

I'm of the age to remember that parking in a garage was probably the worst place to park.
It gave the thieves all night to work away undisturbed while they tried to break the steering lock and hot wire the car.

Sorry for your loss jpo, not sure if I've just had a near miss. I heard my front door alarm go and wondered at 10pm which of the family was going out so called out. No one answered so I called again and my son came to see what I was calling out for and looked out the window to see a stranger in a hoodie running away from the front door....normally car keys are on a table by the door, I got my gti a week ago and luckily had started putting keys elsewhere. Coincidence ...new car ...house entry...pricing up a tracker system!
