Gearbox Upgrade Q's
« on: 09 February 2016, 19:27 »
I'm planning on getting my 020 gearbox in my Golf GTI 16V reconditioned, at the same time I was wondering if there are any things worth upgrading, like fitting a G60 lightweight flywheel and VR6 clutch?

Planning on hiking up the power from my 9A engine so want something that'll handle the power comfortably. It's not a daily driver so there's little need to convert to a hydraulic clutch style gearbox, but if someone has a simple to follow how-to guide with a list of all the parts required I'd be grateful!

if its getting stripped down it would be wise to get a diff bolt kit fitted while its apart. g60 clutch/flywheel won't work as the 020 box uses the odd back to front clutch set-up.

Cheers for that. Are there any worth while flywheel upgrades I can do to my 9A/020 setup then?

What's your gearbox code? I thought 020 referred to the bell housing?!? Regarding your flywheel, you could get it lightened and balanced!

I haven't had eyes on my actual code yet, just assuming it's the 020 as this was the one used on the GTI  16V. The actual code that refers to the gear ratios doesn't really matter in this case as I'm using the one it came with from new.

I'll get my stock flywheel sorted then, sounds easiest!

I was going to suggest a fifth gear conversion, but it would depend on your box code. I did one in mine, .76 final drive I think from memory. Nice cruising, 70mph ( motorway ;-) ) @ just under 3k rpm, good fuel economy, and if your feeling brave you can see 130mph + !

It wasn't too bad on the motorway anyway, sat below 3,000 RPM at 70mph so I will leave it. It's not a daily so I'm not too concerned about fuel economy!

G60 flywheel doesn't fit 020 'box, so yeah get yours lightened and balanced and stick a decent new clutch in it. Why not fit a LSD while its stripped down? ;)

That thought had crossed my mind, I'll ask the gearbox place who's going to rebuild it if they can stick an LSD on it as they were doing the doff bolt kit upgrade for me anyway.

well now would be the time for the lsd . all 020 gearboxs are rod change. the mk2 flywheel really isn't that heavy tbh. if you stick a decent sachs/luk 16v clutch in that should be fine.
