GTI - snow tyres/snow chains
« on: 06 February 2016, 09:28 »
Hi,

I've been spending quite a bit of time with my GTI in the mountains lately. I have the 19 inch Santiago alloys (with 225/35/R19) and have been using Weissenfels Clack and Go Quattro (F30) snow chains. They are great, and go on with practice in about 2mins (for both) and work with the limited space between the tyres/wheel well. They have got me through almost every snow condition but I'm getting nervous about relying on them on a regular basis.

One fell off on a trip - which may have been my error.

I'd like to buy a set of wheels that I can switch out for the winter with snow tyres on. I'm thinking really budget rims - nothing special.

Does anyone know of the rim/tyres combos that will work on a GTI? Is there a set list anywhere?

Grateful for your thoughts.

Just on tyres, I'm running Michelin Pilot Alpins at the moment. Haven't been able to try in deep snow yet, but last week was up our local mountain on serious ice and powder snow and they were great.

Snap. I'm on my 2nd winter with them now and only experienced about 2" of snow, but they were superb.

Got my Winters from them, if you have the GTIpp then you need something like the the 17 Borbets which fit over the 340mmm brakes, if a non pp GTI then 16s will do

"for both" ???

I told my insurance company that I have winter tyres. They asked me if I had 4? I said yes, but asked why? They replied, "we do not provide insurance cover for only 2 winter tyres."

So if you plan on fitting anything other than 4 winter tyres, please check with your insurance company.

As someone else pointed out - lots of grip at the front and no grip at the back - what could possibly go wrong? If you can't work it out have a look on youtube.

I can only assume he meant for both snow chains, not that he's only got 2 winter tyres.... you only fit chains to driven wheels.
