If he changed distributor that would include hall sender.

@OP: was this aligned after it was changed?

Changed distributor this was done by myself after being to vw garages both garages said timing out by one tooth I think they just said that so they could justify charging me ,so timing should be right just lined  distributor back up moved it slightly just to see if this moved the point of stuttering would both dizzy fail at same point 4100 rpm I thought hall sensor failed 5000 rpm have got timing gun but do not know settings and I thought It was not that critical as ecu compensated for this car starts and drives spot on just does not Rev so could travel with in reason to anybody who knows more about there little faults  how can you test hall sensor just unplug and Rev but if hall sensor fails at 5000 rpm this will not work as mine will not Rev past 4100 any help would be greatfuly received . :lipsrsealed:

It makes no difference where you put the distributor,it will always find number 1 cylinder for the ecu and go from there.

It does help though if you have the timing marks on the bottom and top pulleys in the correct place.

Timing gun is pointless on an 8v,it is unuseable as timing sets itself.

Timing gun is pointless on an 8v,it is unuseable as timing sets itself.

Which is why you put the engine into basic setting so that ignition timing does not get altered by ECU. You can then set the dizzy to the correct default position. Without basic setting the ECU adjusts the timing, which is why it does wander if you look at timing marking with a strobe (if timing was irrelevant why would VW put a timing marking there on the shaft).

Timing and cam belt alignment was checked should be wright still would not Rev over 4100 so when I put another dizzy in I made note of where clip on side of dizzy and rotor arm was it slotted back in just moving slightly because of the gear whitch I compensated for stil will not Rev going to try basic next which I was told has been tried but I do not  think it has new plugs different leads plugs look new ish have some old ht leads then look at coil which was changed but made no difference so they sent it back also got told low on compression this why it wil not Rev checked myself it not that bad but quoted £800 to take head off and investigate just wanted me to say no because could not find real problem car starts first time and ticks over too nice any more input or would be greatful
