Hers a big question that owas a hot topic on other forums. Does the seat belt have a red trim down the side? (Although I should be finding out myself soon).

Also how comfortable or not are the seats? They look good but not sure how they would be on Long journeys.

My Big Questions are -

1.  Does it feel "special" enough to justify the price ?  Would it be special enough to run as a weekend car ?
2.  Does it feel quick enough i.e. is it all you need as a fun car - especially on B roads where power isn't everything
3.  Does the overboost really work !?

Most of this has been answered a few pages back but here goes:

- Exhaust is louder than the GTI, different rear muffler. More noise on WOT and great farts during full boost gear changes. Nothing silly mind you. You can still drive hard and not feel ashamed that everybody's looking at you with disgust.

- Seat-belts have a nice thin red line running across on both sides. Amazed as to how many non-car people that came in noticed and praised this.

- Bucket seats are amazing. Just excellent support but none of the discomfort that usually comes with other buckets, definitely seem to be non-punishing on long journeys (2hr so far without issues). Clubsport would feel half as special without them.

- I will tell you a little secret: The overboost doesn't seem to (practically) be there at all. I was also worried about it beforehand. Whenever you floor the throttle you just get a constant surge forward. On dyno runs with and without it, there has a been a mere 9bhp difference and all runs are showing 300+ bhp and always over 380 Nm. This means it is not the "25bhp ON / 10 sec / 25 bhp OFF" thing it was announced to be, but it has its own mind and comes on and off in a more gradual way. Bottom-line is whenever you floor it you will most probably end up with 290+ bhp under your right foot. VW is seriously misleading with the 265ps official value (still all the better for us).

Furthermore I timed 40-120mph (60-160km/h) runs with racing GPS equipment and on average the times are even a few tenths quicker than any R or S3 runs I've seen. Equal power and less weight are the only possible answer.

- B-road blasting is where the car feels at its best. The steering and corner grip is just amazing. Can't imagine I'd dare to go any faster than I'm going with this car, and it certainly feels I'm not yet at the limit, car doesn't even seem to sweat one bit (but Bridgestones do).

Obviously feeling is subjective but to me it feels more special than I'd ever imagine a "reasonably priced" super-hatch to be and definitely more than all the other cars I test-drove or went in (Cupra, Golf R, S3, 330i, Focus RS). The steering wheel is just a dream and all the alcantara bits and special touches (different GTI cell/texture) paired with the gorgeous buckets are making you look below the seat for a helmet...

thanks for the views, really encouraging.

I was ruling out the CS due to price but it sounds like it has a lot going for it.. I guess there is more too it that 0-60 which is good to hear.

More I see the pics and hear about it, the more I think this would be a fantastic weekend car alongside the 330d, that is also practical and reliable without costing the earth, and would make financial sense as a long term keeper.

You always come back to £30k is a lot for a golf, however there are very few limited(ish) run focussed cars anyway, and yes the M2 is more desirable but its also £15k more and for me the CS-S is too track focussed.  Focus RS, not my bag and made in big numbers.  M140i is a bargain for the performance but too similar inside to the 330d to have one as a weekend long term keeper..

Am still torn about colours and wheels though.  Brescias look better to me, and I love it in red and while as you see the side decals better.. Don't think I have seen a silver one yet but suspect it might be a bit boring ?

I've just ordered a 3 door dsg, white with black roof, pano sunroof, 90% tints, rear camera, 19" brescias (I love them!), DCC and bucket seats.  Can't wait!  Anyone want to buy an 7R?!

Discount same as Orange Wheels and an estimated build week currently at 49, which of course could change 12 times before it gets confirmed!

And another question - particularly aimed at UK Clubsport owners - when you put the sidelights on, do the front DRLs dim?  My 7R DRLs dim, but my wife's newer 7R-Line DRLs (it has upgraded xenons as per GTI) don't.  Thanks.

So I have today taken a clubsport for a drive and wow.  I can only compare to a non pp GTI and an R.  Ill start with the driving which is the best feature, the engine is superb, smooth and with the right power.  The throttle response is almost perfect with power always ready to go and the car simply drives itself around. The chassis is brilliant and I was chucking the car in all directions and never once felt like I couldn’t have given it more power.  I could be imagining this but it seemed much more nimbler than the R and actually for some indescribable reason seemed a lot lighter.  The steering seems a lot more focussed than previous golfs, I’m not sure whether this is down to the grip from the alcantara or any particular technical  changes but it worked really well.  Then the engine sound….. Wow again.  To hear it is a joy, seems wholly different to  other GTIs. I couldn’t actually hear the actuator.

The interior, really does feel nice and actually very much like an Audi, the red stitching is subtle and the suede and piano effects really make it look premium.

The exterior is nice, the spoiler is bigger than I would imagined which isn’t that good but you will certainly notice a clubsport next to a standard GTI.  I didn’t like the bresicas on photos and I didn’t like them in the flesh either, they seem like a cheap aftermarket wheel, this is only my own subjective opinion of course.

In summary, this is the best golf I have ever driven, the word I would use is fun.  I was grinning like a Cheshire cat when I got out of the car.  Can’t wait to get mine.

Great to hear your impressions Kitbag.
Having run a GTI putting out similar power to the GTI CS I can vouch for it feeling lighter on its feet than an R and the VAQ diff certainly pulls you out of corners without any fuss.
After the half arsed effort with the Ed35 VW really seem to have pulled it out of the hat with the Ed40.

Was it a manual or DSG out of interest ?

Shame to hear about the wheels I really fancied those but need to see some in the flesh really..
