Upper photo most definitely looks like Black (comparing with my CSG). Bottom one looks to be CSG BUT given it's an S, it has to be black also (they only come in Black/Red/White).

What do I win?

Confused even more now!
The prize is some no longer required Clubsport back seats - only catch is collect from Wolfsburg

Looks like it could be Urano Grey?

Good one, yes it does and it's the only free colour on CS Ed 40 but can't be on a CSS :undecided:

Its CSG, looks great, same as mine on order.

Dave

Hmm, if it CSG then that is really weird as its on a CSS which as mentioned before is only red/black/white.
Unfortunately the person who posted the pic and works in the VW UK press office hasn't replied to my question.
Might have to email the Wolfsburg press office and give them the reg to find out for sure.
My gut feeling is that it's DBP not CSG as it's a CSS and that the Iphone 6 used isn't representing colour too accurately but who knows?
I wonder what number it has on the console as the one at Pistonheads GTI Open and used by Autocar, Auto Express and PH was 000/400 so was definitely pre-production.

Guys, it's a deep black pearl period!    First pic can't be more clear. The DBP in general is not pitch black and has a lighter tone in it, still very distinguishable from a CSG. I know as I've taken more than 100 pics of mine the last week from all possible angles and lighting combos.

What's a bit confusing is the lower photo with the logo but it's a game of the light. Here's how the logo looks on a CSG car:

Take a closer look above the lettering in both photos and it's clear one is metallic black and the other metallic carbon steel. The confusion is created if look below the lettering in the first photo, as there's some reflection of the gravel that makes the black look like grey. Hope I sorted it for you now.

OK, so I still think for whatever reason its CSG, reason being as all Clubsports in DBP have the lower "Clubsport" stripe in light grey rather than black with all other colours.

Good investigative work Dave!
I did think VW would have to make the stripe a contrast colour on the black cars. It's a bit odd as if you follow the line of the air scoop in the side of the front bumper it continues as the stripe aft of the front wheels which is really nice touch on the black red/cars.  To make this work on the black cars, they'd need to make the air scoops grey to match the strip colour which they haven't.

I've always found Deep Black a very black black so this explains everything, why VW PR would make a CSG CSS is a bit of an odd one, maybe it's an upgraded CS Ed 40?

It's definitely black the pictures of that very car are in the auto express review and it was present at the launch in germany. The pictures make it look grey due to the amount of gloss black plastic trim it has but in real life it looks deep black like any other deep black car.
