All depends on supply and demand though - if there are 1000 CS's and 5000 people want them they will retain their value and ultimately cost a lot less than an R.

If you look on the AUC website there are plenty of very recent R's with very low mileages going for well under £25k already.

At the end of the day you cant bend the rules of supply and demand and that will dictate total cost of ownership, not the RRP or monthlies via PCP.

The price entry point of the clubsport just doesn't make sense Andy. VW have either overpriced the clubsport or underpriced the R

^Will VW put their money where their mouth is and give it R busting GFVs?

Demand comes from low supply and desirability, will it be sognificantly more desirable than an R just because it is rare? The bucket seats (if optioned) may well help. To me it's likening comparing a 150TDI GT to a GTD and expecting someone to pay £100 a month for the GT.

The R's price is right amongst it's peers, the CS is a couple of grand too expensive considering the likely lack of access to discount and what it's putting out when not on limited boost. The MPG is the shocker for me. The R is pulling a 120kg Haldex unit, putting out more power and is less than 1mpg more thirsty.

Don't disagree its a very pricey - but then if they don't discount it to sell the allocation, it doesn't really matter if we think its pricey or not, low or no discounts will surely protect future values, regardless of what the pcp GFV says.

Not saying it will achieve BMW 1M status - look at a PCP quote for one of them and its irrelevant given they go for more than list now.. but there might be enough enthusiasts who want one to keep used values strong, or there might not !

That's all unknown for now - I am having a similar ponder about the M2 tbh - its £44k which isn't cheap, and little chance of a discount but will probably hold its value very well due to around 2 cars per dealer per year but its all the land of the unknown.

Bearing in mind the CS is just a Cupra underneath - what is the Cupra's official consumption? I can't check right now as I'm using a phone and the screen is too fiddly and my eyesight is getting sh!t but I know my friend's Cupra did better fuel mileage than my R does despite him being a harder driver. Then again, all he did was motorway work which kind of negates the Haldex anyway as it's steady speed stuff.

Not wanting to offend anyone but I have found the consumption on most VAG products generally poor - and I have owned plenty both VW and Audi.

On the test route I took before deciding on my 330d (I also drove a GTi PP, Golf R, Audi S3, Audi RS3 and BMW M235i) on the same roads on the same day.  I was really disappointed with the Audi S3, GTi and the R which were worse than the M235i and tbh the Audi RS3 wasn't hardly any worse than either GTi or R

Not sure what people get in daily driving but I have found 4 cyl turbo engines from VAG to be generally no better than 6 cyl BMW engines in terms of fuel - but that's just my own experience.  Even in diesel land, my 330d with 260 odd BHP does exactly the same daily MPG (45) as my old Audi A3 tdi 170 despite being heavier and 50% bigger engine ?!

Drisser: I've found BMW diesels to be better on the mpg at an 80mph cruising speed than the current crop of 2.0TDI units too. My old boss' 2007 520D used to do far better than my MK5 170TDI. One thing's for sure - for journeys shorter than 12 miles, the GTD mpg is sh!te unless you're driving like a nun, it's quite respectable on journeys greater than 50 miles in the Summer.

My R is pretty good on fuel considering what's under the bonnet, my 20 mile commute home tonight saw almost 34mpg, almost all of it doing 60-80mph. Driving my GTD just as hard might've seen 48mpg in the current conditions.

If BMW would do a decent looking 1 series i'd consider it. Those chunky sills, the plumber's van side profile and not a particularly looking front or back end put me right off, the 2 series only looks marginally better IMO. The 3/4 series are much better looking, but I have no need for a car of that size and the missus would never drive a car that big. I'd be looking for very big discount on the BMW to buy new, the residuals are generally pretty poor for a German motor - the price of going heavy in the fleet market.

For the CS to be the same price (pretty much) as the R and feel a bit special as well as reasonable value for money, it should've come with unique 19" wheels, the bucket seats and big Brembo brakes as standard.

And a standard 280/290bhp like the Cupra and not a 10-second boost.

I know I'm going against the trend. I'm convinced now that I want one. Car wow are giving some discount. Took it to my local dealer who said they will look at matching.  However they are saying that the car isn't on the finance system so having to go back  Tommoro.  I am asking for a relatively high spec. Anyone had luck with vw matching?
