DSG Left Foot Braking Anybody?
« on: 16 January 2016, 20:08 »
So, just ordered my first car with DSG (GTi, Carbon Grey, Carplay, Rear Airbags).

Wondering whether people use left foot braking. I know it's hard not to over brake, initially, but is it worth persevering?

Been driving DSG performance Golfs for 10+ years and never once felt inclined to train my left foot to brake.  It would be completely unnatural.  The placement of the brake pedal is designed for right foot braking.  I reckon it would take a considerable time to fully retrain yourself and the risk of getting it wrong, possibly with unfortunate consequences would be quite high.  I guess it can be done but I wouldn't do it.

I've read several times before that VW programs every vehicle ECU so that left foot braking does not work, as a safety feature - if tried, it just reduces engine revs and kills power

Know that to be the case with manuals - the system allows a blip, for rev matching, but no more. Not talking about rally style left foot braking though, just using right foot for throttle and left foot for brake, F1 style.

I do use LFB when driving an auto and that alone is the reason I would never consider a DSG box. To me it has always come naturally to me to use my left foot for braking when driving an auto.

The way modern cars work is that when you have pressure on the brake pedal the fly by wire throttle cuts the signal so it has no imput.

Do it all the time to keep feeling in it.
Can't do it properly in most modern cars as it cuts the throttle.
Can get away with heel and toe with just a small blip.
