Door entry/sill guards
« on: 16 January 2016, 16:16 »
Hi folks,

I posted over in the newbie forum, but thought I'd post here too.

I've recently got a new GTI and am loving it, came from a GTD so pretty familiar with them!

On the old car the sills got a bit scuffed up as they're quite wide so I got some of the official sill guards, I'm a bit disappointed by how little they cover really. I'd imagine they may be a mare to change, but didn't know if anyone had any better ones fitted?

I have the clear vinyl boot lip protector which I had on the GTD which was pretty good. Shame they don't something similar for the doors.

Booth11 fitted some I believe
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?action=profile;u=44709;area=showposts;start=280

I certainly did and they are great and cover a much larger area than the OP's ones.  I had the same ones on my mk6 GTI and they did a sterling job protecting the sills, so it was a no-brainer to go for these again.

Available here for 4 door (5dr) GTI http://www.lockwoodinternational.co.uk/sill-protectors/volkswagen/golf/golf-mk7/4-door/golf-sills-part-no-k38.html

Not available for 3dr unfortunately.

Pics of mine which are plain ones as Lockwood don't do ones with the R logo.

I bought some helitape and fitted it. It catches some dirt around the edges but that cleans off well enough and it's definitely stopped me marking the sills.

If there is anyone out there in the Leeds area with a Mk7 3-door, Lockwood would be delighted if you could call in, so they could make templates.

Lockwood state this on their website.  Makes me laugh. I mean how difficult is it to get access to a Golf 3 dr to measure up.  They could just have one on a test drive and do the necessary.

I guess they go on demand for a lot of things and maybe there's not enough demand for 3 door Golfs.
To get one on a test drive they'd have to pay a staff member to book an appointment, get the car minus bloke in corporate tie on an unaccompanied test drive, bring it to their HQ, measure, cut, trial fit, make program for laser cutters or whatever they use. Fit a prototype retail version, remove 3M tape, clean up, take car back, pay member of staff to listen to sales persons horsepoop about finance etc etc before staff member can escape their clutches...

It'd be easier to hire a 3 door for a day but I'll bet there won't be many, if any 3 door hire Golfs in the UK.

When I had my 3 door GTI nobody except VW did sill protectors for it.

Once I changed to a five door car (as one does) there was a stack of choices.

I went for RGM black plastic ones as a) they were cheap b) the black contrasts with the white and c) Sootchucker had some and they looked good in his photos.

Am I happy with them? They do the job
Do I have a load of nice detailed photos and a mini review? No (but Sootchucker does!)

Get your point about the test drive Mr Ex, but one way or anothe,r without too much expense, they could get hold of a 3dr I'm sure.  There's quite a few on forums would buy them if they were available and Lockwood themselves could easily post a request for someone to come forward on a few forums but never seen anything.  I think Lockwood should be more proactive in this matter.

I remember Sootchuckers review and pics of the RGM ones and they looked very good, but far better suited to a white, light coloured or red car.  No offence, but doubt they would look quite so good on the darker cars.   I did consider these when looking, but think they would look just plain odd on black, being matt.

I've trained the kids to step into the footwell rather than on the sill when entering my car
