Conversion of MIB I to MIB II

Didn't know if this would be of any interest, but I noticed in the VW Driver Magazine that the company "VAG-TEC", were advertising retrofitting of the discover Nav pro to MK7 Golf models. I therefore enquired as to the possibility of "upgrading" my MIB I Discover Nav Pro to the later MIB II unit to have access to CAR-NET with Apple Play and Android Auto etc. Below is the result of a few emails.

ME - I have a 2013 MK7 GTD, fitted with the 1st Version of the Discover Nav pro (8" screen - MIB-I).  I would like to get the new Car-net systems (Apple carplay, Android  Auto etc.). Is it yet possible to either update an MIB I unit or retro  fit an MIB II unit (I guess the bit in the glovebox). If so, how much  would this be please ?

ME - Many thanks for the quick response. I hope you don't mind but I do  have a few more questions, as obviously it's quite a bit on money  (although slightly cheaper than I thought), I just want to make sure I  understand everything before making a decision.

 1. I assume the price is for the "brain" in the glovebox, with my  existing screen being reused ? Does this unit have a SIM card slot as  well as the Two SD card slots ?

 2. Does your price include changing my MDI socket in the front chubby  hole to a USB socket so that a phone can be plugged in for Apple  CarPlay  / Android auto ?

 3. Are the units genuine new VW units from the factory or  reconditioned units. Also what about component protection, is this
 "legally" removed  by connecting to VW, or a "hack"? I.e. Would the  unit have full functionality (phone, Nav etc.), just like my current  unit ?

 4. I currently have Dynaudio, as my car is a Sept 2013 build, will the  new MIB II unit be compatible with my existing Dynaudio amp, or would  this also need updating ?

 5. Are you categorically able to state that with this update to my  2013 GTD currently with Pro Nav and Dynaudio, I will end up with  effectively the same units as currently shipping with 2016 MY cars,  I.e. Full Car-Net with the "Guide and Inform plus"  features, (Google  Earth, parking features etc.) as well as App Connect with Apple CarPlay  and Android Auto will all the features they bring, and will they be  fully registered and ready to go or would I still need to go to a  dealer to get some work done and / Or licenses purchased ?

VAG_TEC - 1) Yes, the price is for the "brain" in the glovebox, with your existing screen being reused and the unit has a SIM card slot and two SD card slots.

 2) You will need an extra cable for the CarPlay. I don't have a price for this at the moment.

 3) The unit is refurbished and it is component free, no components are blocked and you will have the full functionality with all ware upgrades.

 4) Yes, you will need to update the Dynaudio Amp. I don't have a price for this at the moment.

 5) you will have all the function and you do not need to go to a dealer.


So there you have it, £1500 plus the USB socket and cable plus the Dynaudio amp (which I guess will also be several hundred pounds). Bearing in mind that my car already had the 8" Pro-Nav and they are re-using my existing screen, I really don't think it's worthwhile and am considering instead changing the car (to mainly take advantage of the finance and loyalty discount offers). Am currently considering changing my beloved GTD (the 4th Diesel in a row) for a GTI Performance Pack DSG. Just currently looking into the figures to see If they stack up.

Thought others might be interested that are considering this ?

I would say you would have to be totally mental to spend a minimum of 1500 quid to achieve that!

That's not a bad price at all.

No good to me as I don't even have Discover nav so no aerial but for those running a MIB1 Discover Nav that's not too horrific a price to upgrade.
I doubt I'd bother upgrading a MIB2 Discover Nav to a Pro but with the first gen you would appreciate the differences far more.

I am sorry I have made a mistake the part exchange is possible, if you have the Discovery media, we can offer it to you for £100.
 
The unit does not have the video in motion but we can install it for £48.00.
