MK4 Golf GTI Project
« on: 12 January 2016, 10:22 »
Hi Everyone!

Wanted to share with you a little project that I have embarked on with one of my mates. We decided to try and build up a 1.8T GTI to have some fun with it on the drag strip at VAG events throughout the year. One thing we didn't want to do though was go nuts on cost, we wanted to keep to a budget.

We have pretty much built the car now and we are just waiting to get a custom map and it should be all good to go! So i will start from the beginning;

We bought a 1999 S reg Golf Gti with 107000 miles on the clock. Was in pretty good condition, it had R32 leather seats added, lowered and already had a Miltek exhaust system.

Some original pics;

We decided the things we wanted to upgrade were;

- Full Turbo Back Exhaust inc. Downpipe
- Uprated Intercooler
- Uprated injectors
- High Pressure Fuel Pump
- Larger turbo
- Exhaust manifold
- Larger intake
- High performance clutch
- Forged Con rods
- Weight reduction

So i will show you what we have done so far!  :smiley:

First thing we did was upgrade the intercooler and install the down pipe and de-cat pipe onto the miltek system already on the car....

I couldn't believe how small the standard intercooler was!!!

The intercooler was a bit fiddly and it did take some time to get it into the correct position without modifying the bumper...but we were quite pleased with the end result.

Next we decided to upgrade the clutch and the brakes and the injectors.

We bought Brembo grooved discs all the way round with brembo pads. At thi stage we felt these would suffice, especially as i have previously owned a Leon Cupra and Subaru Impreza STI and always found the Brembo brakes to be excellent.

I did a little bit of research with the injectors and a few people had gone down the lines of purchasing Saab Red Top Injectors as they are compatible with Golf GTI's...They are also 400cc so will be more than capable of coping with a higher flow of fuel.

The clutch was off an American site - supposedly stage 3 but it looks like its a sach's organic stage 1 clutch re-branded....only time will tell with that one!

Then we installed the injectors....

We had some new toys delivered -

So decided to firstly install the new rods. I couldnt get over the difference between forged steel rods and standard GTI rods! Good job we changed them thats for sure!

Then we started to work on the turbo;

This was never going to be an easy swap out, there was going to be some modification needed to make sure this could be installed, including new braided lines etc...I will come back later with how we got on with this.

We also purchased a new exhaust manifold, to fit the turbo;

We have also purchased a High Pressure Fuel Pump;

But we are waiting for some fuel lines to come before installing that.

That is all we have done so far! I will be back with more updates once we have them!  :smiley:

we got a lot of the parts from http://www.maxspeedingrods.co.uk/

Some people may turn their noses up at this place, but i can honestly say we've had no issues with the parts and they have been on the car for some time now....I was quite sceptical if i am honest, i was expecting the turbo to blow up or the rods to actually not be as tough as first thought....but so far so good!  :grin:
