Its madness though as it would be a false economy. If it was say £6000 up front for a saving of £60 a month he would be much better putting that money aside and using it to bring his monthly's down

It would be different if it was for a different model or some other spec but to change from an R to an R just because the deals are cheaper is mental

Guys, so I dropped car off this morning and salesman I was meant to see wasn't there, guess he took the easy route and made a B-line for the nearest toilet when he seen me coming.
Anyway all other salesmen were busy so I just left.
Think I was being a bit crazy and ambitious so gonna leave it and not bother anyone in this instance ha ha ha.

PS regarding me having money to burn.....erm certainly not, I wish lol
My wife and I thought about moving house a few times but we are in our own house 11 years and we would rather pay a small mortgage and enjoy life than sink all our money into houses, so instead I buy cars and she buys handbags, ie we save a bit each month and spend the rest and enjoy life, no credit cards, no loans etc it works for us and we're happy

PS thanks for the advice etc

I suspect some of Ian's "crazy thoughts" are driven by the issues he's experiencing with his R, and his unending desire for a set of Prets, which I can sort of understand.  Still was a crazy thought though, lol.  Probably cheaper to buy a set of Prets (even via the dealer) than swap cars.

Tbh Becs the issues had nothing to do with my thoughts as I had always thought they would be sorted with no issues, how wrong was I, so disappointed right now

I feel for you Ian, I really do.  Don't give up, be persistent, be a nuisance if that what it takes. Hopefully the dealer might have a different take on it if the comparison R's prove to be free of these noises and issues.  See what transpires from that.  Keep your chin up Ian.

While we're at it, what is it with women and handbags ?
Granted they are cheaper to buy than cars

Handbags are to some women, what cars are to some men.

There are exceptions though.

Despite the craziness (which we'd pretty much expect on here anyway) this is quite an interesting thread.

Everyone has different circumstances and like any hobby it can get a bit out of hand and become a bit of an obsession. I've had way too many cars in my life over the years and like Ian I went through a stage with my first mk6 of buying a pretty standard one and then adding retrofits as it was pretty easy and gave me a challenge and a bit of a project. I'd always had a bit of an alloy wheel obsession anyway and went through no less than seven sets on that car! Some of them were bought but never fitted. To an outsider that sounds like a) a massive expense and b) just plain crazy. But actually from my standpoint it cost money yes, however none of the parts were bought new and each time I bought something I sold something so costs were quite well balanced. Allowing for the fact that tyres wear out in use anyway and each purchase was carefully made only at the right price so the 'old' parts could be sold on for a decent price too the costs weren't horrendous by any means. The time invested was significant I guess but that's irrelevant as it was good fun and I learnt lots. And I didn't have to buy a new set of tyres for any of my cars for years and years!!!

Steve (p3ssa) mentions £6k as a ball park figure but with the current chaos it would actually be quite interesting how the figures would actually pan out right now as I think the current situation where the cars still have a pretty decent used value on paper versus the new car incentives VW are offering might make a surprising 'once in a lifetime' chance for a few lucky owners.
This situation will be very short lived while the market settles down and once VW find a direction past the current almost (stage managed) panic.

Early on in the thread Watts had a good point which is one I always stick to once I've bought a car - STOP LOOKING!
I generally have at least a six month blinkered period before I even look at the market again when I've made a car purchase. Once the six months are up I tend to start planning the next move for a year or two down the line.
My R was a bit of an 'accidental' purchase that wasn't planned and I broke a few personal rules with it but I have (so far) no regrets and love driving the thing. I'm pretty sure it'll be the last time I buy a car of this type so I'll make the most of owning it which is something I've regrettably not done with a few of my cars.

How about buying a brand new set of Prets from Kunzmann.de for E2799 (£2104)? To chop your R in now (if you can get ordered soon enough to get your incentives), you might get £2250 incentives to offset your losses, but the first depreciation is the biggest, you will almost certainly lose £6k so the dealer can sell it for a little less than a new one with enough margin (likely £4k) to make it worth their while, so will have to find almost £4k (or £111pm on PCP).

You can either sell your Cadiz to offset your losses (likely to get £900-1000 for an almost new set with no damage), or keep them to sell the Prets again later when you get shot of the R.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
