Whistle / drone from front drivers side wheel
« on: 21 December 2015, 11:29 »
Morning.

I have noticed a whistle/drone coming from I believe the front drivers side wheel which only starts at 3-5MPH and not in reverse.  I have checked the disk/pad and there is no visible obstruction so I am of the opinion the calliper is sticking but haven't ruled out the possibility of a failing wheel bearing although it is unlikely at 2rys/20k miles.

The car is booked in for inspection early Jan (still under warranty) but I want to go in educated in case the dealership tries to pull the wool over my eyes.

Any thoughts.

If the pad was sticking then the wheel would be very hot after a long drive.

It's possible the calliper slider pins are gummed up and not allowing the calliper retract sufficiently after braking.

A wheel bearing would be a drone around 30mph upwards and change tone when cornering.

Took the car for a spirited drive early this morning on the M3 and after 40 minutes of fast (legal) driving there was no difference in temperature in the front brakes or wheels.

Maybe a sidewall bulge on the tyre or stepped wear pattern?
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

That was my first thought as although the tyres were brand new they were some dodgy budget rubber and pretty rubbish in the wet. They have been replaced with Michelin PS3 but the noise is still there

You could try swapping a couple of wheels around and see if the noise moves with it, that way you'd rule out the tyres/wheels.
