Retrofit Discover Navigation
« on: 17 December 2015, 10:43 »
Hi,

I have the Composition Media pack in my MK7 GTD (DAB+, Bluetooth, media streaming etc) and want to upgrade to Discover Navigation which I understand will not require a dealership visit to remove Content Control.

With regards to part numbers am I correct in thinking I need
Sat Nav puck antenna
5G0035846A – Main unit/Interface
5G0919605D – Screen

I am assuming radio inc DAB+/media/Bluetooth/Sat Nav are modular, will I need to find a specific multimedia unit to retain DAB+?

I would prefer Discover Pro but it would seem retrofitting is a mine field and frankly, rather expensive!

not exactly an answer to your question, but a mate bought a GTD the other day and the dealer fitted this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Golf-Mk-7-MK7-Skoda-Octavia-SatNav-GPS-Satellite-Navigation-Interface-Adapter-/291449996479?_trksid=p2141725.m3641.l6368

basically, it fits on the inside the existing media unit and you hold one of the buttons down and it flips to a garmin satnav, much more efficient and tbh a better satnav than what is provided in the discover unit.

I think you'll find the third party unit(s) are the only option and that its not possible to get the OEM units (of either type) fitted retrospectively because it needs VW factory authorisation, which they won't give.

If you have a search on here there have a been a couple of instances where the dealer hasn't specced the car properly from the factory and ordered the wrong head unit. The only way to change it was to reorder the car.
I think it was on earlier cars though so it might have changed.

I don't think it has changed... VW would probably tell you that its to prevent theft I am guessing.

Think i'm going to park this idea for the moment as i need to do a bit more research on options, in the meantime i'm going to use my iPhone for navigation. Well i've got to use my data allowance somehow!

The "other" consideration in this interesting exercise is the extended coverage of the mk7's component protection system.
You probably already know that all of the controllers on the MOST are included into the "Constellation" (as VW put-it) of modules that are covered by the component protection protocols. Essentially, every time that the ignition is turner-on, the CAN Gateway interrogates the modules  in the constellation. The CAN Gateway compares the identity of these module at switch-on with their identity at the previous switch-on. If they are not the same, a CP error is generated and the device will either only partially work (in the case of J794, I understand that volume control is lost - no sound), or the module won't work at all. The only way to remove the error (I believe) is for the car to be connected to VW's central FAZIT system back  at head-office. Only registered dealers have this access. VW say that this process protects against the black-market for stolen audio equipment - but it has the added advantage of increasing revenue for the dealer - perhaps just a coincidence!

Anyhow - just something to bear-in-mind

It more than just hook it up at the dealer though, HQ have to actually authorize it to release a code or login to the computer in the car and do a reset or something.

And apparently, even at the cost of a new car, they won't do it.

At least they are being consistent.

It must be slightly different to what DV52 says though, because what we do know is that a like for like replacement of the entertainment system is possible (when it has a fault), without any VW buggery. So its clearly more of a component type than serial number checking system.

The thing to also confirm is that the Garmin retrofit is apparently not compatible with a car that has Dynaudio...
