Changing from driving an automatic to a manual
« on: 15 December 2015, 05:29 »
Hi just a bit of background. I grew up in Canada on a farm so have exposure to driving manuals from pick up trucks with four on the floor and three on the tree plus tractors with more than enough gears. So I have been driving a 1996 golf auto with an 01M gearbox. I have had more than enough problems with it and after it failed the last MOT I looked for cheap parts but sadly the cost of new or even used parts was too much. By chance I happened to pick up a 1.6 CL mk3 manual transmission for cheaper than repairing my old golf. I took it for a drive and found that the clutch is quite sensitive. What I mean by this is that there isn't much leeway when pulling away in first, you really got to time it quite right. Is this normal for this model? I have driven Opels, Mazdas, Fords, Fiats and even a Lada with manual transmissions and they all vary to the degree of leeway you get starting off in first. I find the golf to be quite fickle. Is this the norm?

Long time no see mate.
Golf clutches (and almost all VWs from the early to mid 90s) tend to 'come' quite late and the grip zone is relatively narrow. If you haven't driven a manual in a while then it can feel quite sensitive, more so than other manuals.

Yeah bought a replacement golf. Will try to sort the other one out and then donate it to a friend...;)
