1.6 engines any good?

Picked up a manual 1.6 55kw..originally was going to use it to repair my automatic...but may be better to just leave it and use it instead....seems to be a bit quicker...maybe better engine weight ratio?let's here from 1.6 owners....:)

think the mk3 golf came with 2 different 1.6 engines. the crappy lean forward 1.6 (75bhp) and the lean back (100bhp) one. which one are you referring to?

55kW is 75hp ;)

It is reasonably reliable, the main difference to the 1.8 and larger 4 cylinders is that the water pump is driven by cam belt.

I had an MPi 1.6 AEE and was nippy enough. Used to be able to outrun a mates MK4 2l GTi til we hit the motorway.

I am sure if I drive it the way I drove in Canada I would fail the test here. I will have to practise for awhile before I take the test. I believe I will have to put the parkiing break on when I come to a stop during the test instead of just keeping my foot on the brake pedal. As I grew up on a farm in Canada drove a lot of manual trucks and all tractors at that time were manuals. Never once did my dad use the parking brake whilst driving a manual but I guess I will have to during the test. Not sure I can make the adjustment as most of my manual driving was with a John Deere 2020...:) which has an unsynchronised gearbox..
