Coolant leak woes, What is this part?
« on: 05 December 2015, 17:42 »
Hi All,

some time ago I spotted a coolant line that had degraded and was swollen, so i have swapped out that part today after alot of faffing about and alas i still appear to have a leak.

The part in the picture ( looks like a UFO) that is bolted to the side of the block above the bell housing appears to be weeping. I suspect this area further due to there being almost new bolts that are bright compared to the rest. ( one of the bolts is visible)

What is that part?..

Sorry for the noob question.

Many thanks

Looks like secondary air valve. Don't think they are water cooled though!

ahh right..I wonder if the temp regulator housing is weeping then?

I may try and nip em up a bit tighter or find some torque specs

thanks for the reply

There is a coolant flange bolted to the block adjacent to the Sai valve. Fairly typical leaker :-)

Is that the part that houses the temp sender?

I was just reading about it all....the "o" ring perishes/degrades...?

I am thinking about just hitting TPS and getting a new housing...does that sound about right?

thanks for the responses!

That's the one. Its not a bad job, but a bit of a faff to replace. Just remember to drain your coolant down. A good time to replace it ready for winter ;-)

Literally just posted this in another coolant leak related thread;

I recently had a very slow coolant leak happening. After 20 miles or so, no noticeable drop in header tank, but after a good run (few hundred miles for example) the level would drop to about halfway between the low and high.

Originally thought it was the "coolant plastic flange" on the right hand side of the engine block and/or the thermostat housing. Replaced these earlier in the year and thought I'd fixed it. I hadn't!

Did a bit of research and the other classic leak location is the "plastic y-piece" on the left hand side of the engine block, next to the charcoal canister and kind of underneath the header tank but slightly forward. I paid £30 for an ECS tuning metal replacement from PSI tuning and fitted it at the weekend. Still need to do enough miles to tell if its actually fixed but the give-away was some pink crust building up around where the hoses joined the y-piece.

HTH?

I had done a very thorough inspection of leakages and the only place was across the bell housing of the gearbox...the coolant runs down and drips off the hard lines of what looks like the steering pump that runs down the back and across the side of the sump.

Since faffing about with the lower hose to the flange unit I know I disturbed the flange, that has made the leak worse..I cant wait to get it off and inspect it now I have a replacement to hand.

shall post pics etc

It's dead easy to fit, decent access especially if you have the airbox removed and a cone filter fitted. Just make sure to drain your coolant first and don't forget like I've been know to in the past
