Mk2 by a mile, then the Mk1 followed by the mk3.

The rest aren't even proper cars

I don't think i'm alone in thinking that the MK3 was an awful rust-bucket of a car. MK2 is the one i'm most fond of, but nostalgia is a funny thing. If VW started offering to build new MK2 GTIs would you have one now next to a MK7 R? VW don't make bullet proof cars like that any more, but neither do anyone else- the price of delicate and intricate technology widespread in modern cars.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

The mk3 was a good car, but corners were cut in the materials used to make it and standards have been poor ever since. Cars these days are not built to last anymore hence why all the modern generations are inferior. The may be comfortable, full of tech and easy to drive but they just aren't proper cars anymore. It's not a secret that the mk7 section of this forum is predominantly made up of disgruntled motorists who aren't happy with the product. Speaks for itself.

When any of the cars were current models there was lots of "disgruntled" comments. I've been around GTI's for nearly 30 years.
The mk3 wasn't just a few corners cut it was a pile of (ugly) poop, VW went on a policy of 'global resourcing' at the time which meant they bought cheap components to keep manufacturing costs down. I owned two and still have a mk3 generation car (so in effect 3). The only good step up on the mk3 was after a couple years when they introduced the Simos injection which got rid of the horrible heavy throttle response.
I've had two mk1 generation cars both were fastidiously maintained and both were pretty unreliable, the first a W reg was a rust bucket - and they weren't that old when I owned them, and thankfully neither was I at the time so I was still fit enough to walk to work at 5am when they wouldn't start!!! Grrrrr.
I owned at least four mk2's and although they were solidly built they weren't without their problems and the later cars weren't without cost cutting either. Contrary to the advert with the squeaky earring - they used to rattle and squeak too, I was heavily involved with GTI tuning in those days and have been in literally dozens of mk2 cars from mint standard to heavily modified so I don't wear rose tinted specs.
I'm not saying the mk4 and onwards were anything special build wise as they're not, but like all cars since the 70's they're just disposable objects and the driving dynamics of a standard mk7 GTI is simply the stuff dreams were made of when I learnt to drive in the mid 80's.

Don't speak for me. I'm not unhappy or disgruntled with my Mk7 GTI. To the contrary, it's the best damn car I've ever owned. Fact!

People see what they want to see.
I had one mk4 GTI that was flawless.
I had one Leon Cupra (mk4 chassis etc) that didn't skip a beat.
I had a mk5 TDI that had one slight hiccup that was when a techie didn't tighten a turbo hose properly (and the engine was tuned so therefore the turbo hose had its work cut out).
I had a mk5 GTI that worked just fine and dandy the whole time I had it.
I had two mk6 GTI's that both ran flawlessly and one of which ran through a horrendously wet winter commuting 100 miles, seven days a week, on top of normal family duties.
I had a mk7 GTI that ran 20 months without so much as a single hitch other than battery drain from boot light left on when I didn't use the car for two weeks.
And now a mk7R which, up until now has been perfect. Ok the engine sounds like there's a school bell ringing in it at idle but I think they all do that?

I've had a mk 7 GTI and R, I was more than happy with both cars - in fact, they were both outstanding motors.  Don't mistake people discussing their cars on a forum for being disgruntled.  I have nothing but praise for the mk 7 Golfs I've owned, as have many on this forum, so I'm not sure where you've got this opinion from?

I see where he's coming from tbh. Forums in general (whether it be about cars or gadgets or whatever) tend to draw more negative posts than positive - i.e. the casual browser with a problem with his car will search for "Golf GTI forum" and post his woes on it hoping for some help... and once his issue is solved he might never post on here again!

It's the same on review sites such as TripAdvisor. You're more inclined to post about a negative experience than a positive one.

Are you suggesting you're pleased with your Mk6 because it didn't break down when it rained? I'm pretty sure most people's golfs (and the rest) survived, I was probably still driving my mk2 G60, which didn't let me down in the 2 years I drove it daily.

I love the Mk2's, but they aren't great for long commutes simply because they aren't as comfortable as modern stuff. We have a Mk3 Tdi at the moment too and that is actually very good, particularly as it is one of the few that hasn't rotted away. Might get a newer golf one day, but then again probably not as the Skoda range does much the same job for a lower price.

Yes! I was amazed a bit of drizzle didn't bring an electronics packed modern car to a complete standstill in the outside lane of a dual carriageway as I've been reading forums far too long, so therefore I'm convinced my cars are on borrowed time 24/7.

This was more than a bit of rain, this was late 2012 when it did nothing but bucket down for weeks/months on end in my part of the world. The A38 and M5 through Devon was like an island with nothing but standing water either side all winter. Having an older GTI in my possession too the difference in driving the two was night and day, one feeling like it was going to aquaplane off the road every few minutes and the other rock solid, warm, comfortable and...

Still, the older one was more fun/challenging!

And yes, if you're not neurotic about badges the Skoda range is pretty darned good. If it wasn't so long I'd love an Octavia vRS and I also have a massive soft spot for the sportier SEATs. I also had a Fabia vRS for a little while around 2006ish which I regretted selling.
