What to do??
« on: 06 November 2015, 20:55 »
My R has been delivered to the dealer over a month early than expected but I had arranged a January registration and collection to get a 2016 reg, I know the plates do not change then but figured that a 2016 reg car would be worth more down the line than a 2015 but am now not sure what to do.

My current GTI is only 2 years old but I figured it would be easier to sell next spring that in the run up to Christmas, obviously I run the risk of even more depreciation on it but recon an R would be worth more in the long run and so loose me less.

Decisions decisions.

To me, this sounds pretty easy. Get the new car now! I don't know the circumstances but getting a new car is supposed to be exciting, how can you even consider waiting?

Get it now - a 65 plate car is a 65 plate car, whether it is Nov/Dec 15 or Jan 16 - There'll be £300-500 in it regarding future p/x value. People care about plate changes when buying a car, not so much the month it was bought if it didn't coincide with a plate change.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Definitely get it now! It is a 2016 Model Year car either way. The difference in value whether it is registered in 2015 or 2016 is virtually nil, not even likely to be a few hundred.

The GTI value is unlikely to increase between now and January, but difficult to call how much less it would be worth.

The used car markets tend to nosedive at this time of year so your part ex will drop about a grand overnight in November and stay that way for three months or so. The prices tend to recover a bit in late Feb then drop a bit with the plate change in Spring.
With the current uncertainty VW book prices will be 'cautious' right now and who knows where it will be at in the new year.
Take a gamble on book prices recovering in the new year or grab the keys now?
I know what I'd do!

I had this same situation mate, basically as I'm from N.ireland our registrations change in December and I had the option of the dealer holding my car until January to make it a 2016 car. In the end I just couldn't wait, once I seen the car I wanted it straight away . Most people say I made a silly decision BUT the difference in price for my trade in (2014 GTD) was about £850 between now and Jan so basically that would of wiped out the difference in price come time I sell the R being a 2015 to a 2016, at the end of the days it's the exact same car.
I say live for today and enjoy it while you can, life's too short to be waiting around any longer than you have to
